Re: Promotions that don't make Sense at the Workplace

I appreciate all the responses. In my job one of the women who got promoted cannot be left alone to supervise if the other supervisor on schedule is not available that day. The manager has to come and help whereas if it was the other way around, the other supervisors could manage on their own. I don't know I don't get it. When she got promoted, I seriously thought to myself "I simply can't believe Betty* of all people is a supervisor" to myself every couple of weeks.

Agree with these.

Many times upper management is looking two steps up when considering someone for a promotion. They choose the person who has the potential to keep advancing. One person may know the job backwards and forwards, but be unsuitable for anything beyond that job. The second person may be somewhat less skilled, but has great potential for the future. The second person is going to get the job.

I think that people are sometimes promoted because they are merely acceptable ..... and won't be a threat to the people they report to.

Sometimes being the best at what you do isn't enough......I've seen people so focused on thier work that promotions pass them by over and over...not because they are incapable of moving up but because they are invaluable to move.

I have also seen the whole social aspect behind promotions.....and when you look at introverts versus extroverts I can almost promise you the extrovert will get the promotion most of the time.

I think it best not to dwell on other people promotions or pay. I believe in just doing the best job you can for the company. You don't know what is in the mind of administration. It could be numerous reasons why they promote. One could be, they don't abuse sick time etc.

Re: Promotions that don't make Sense at the Workplace

Huh? How can someone who applied for a higher level job and then gets that job be "shocked" when the promotion goes to them???? Most people don't apply for jobs assuming that they won't get it. Speaking as a manger, I hear this type of thing all the time. But you, as a worker bee, only know about 25% of the story. If that. There are many factors that go into selecting a person for a job, it's not only about job performance. I have seen many fine candidates who superior technical skills lose out to people who aren't as good technically but surpass them in other areas that are just as crucial to the job. Focus on yourself and do the job you are paid to do. Who gets promoted and who doesn't get promoted shouldn't concern you...unless, you were turned down for job. If you were, you are entitled to a rationale for why you were passed over.

Chyrstaltree I would be with you if these jobs had an interview process since you don't know what went on during the interview. But that wasn't the case. People were just chosen when there was a job vacancy.

Some people are given a promotion because the PTB do not want to give them a raise.

Re: Promotions that don't make Sense at the Workplace

In General: Some folks 'know' certain people. Sometimes it's 'who you know', etc. In general, other times a manager doesn't want to promote someone who will eventually take over his/her position, so he/she promotes a 'worker bee', instead. Other times the folks promoted have done a lot of social networking with the 'big shots' within the company. All sorts of reasons why. Sometimes their personalities/energy/etc. are similar to what the employer wants for his/her company.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).
