From everything I've read, yes, our prison system is a for profit corporation.

And it is inhabited by and large with the poor.

Flame away, I don't care.

The prison system is a national disgrace. As long as it continues to profit investors, it won't change in any dramatic way.

so it is a privatized prison? Ai yi.

According to this article the Willacy County Correctional Center is a privately-owned prison:

wow...what a surprise...NOT!

From the article -

The private prison, about 200 miles south of San Antonio, once operated as a “tent city,” or immigration detention facility for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In 2011, it removed all of its detainees after reports of abuse, and a month later it reopened as a Criminal Alien Requirement prison.

What some people don't know is that the U.S. incarcerates more people than any other country in the world, it's a big business. Some people won't like this but victimless crimes (drug possession, paid adult consenting s-x)should not be a cause for jail. People imprisoned for minor crimes learn how to be criminals in jail. They also have less opportunity for jobs with a criminal record.

People who have money do not go go prison for minor crimes.

But poor people do.

Anther source of income for cities - incarcerating people for unpaid parking tickets....or unpaid library fines.

I agree with you, chessylady. And what you say, as you know, has little to do with opinion and a lot to do with facts.

The prison system in the USA has become housing for the poor and the sick. It's a disaster.

It take zero imagination to figure out that a private prison needs bodies to make money.

Yes, it is. It's horrible for those who do not belong there. It's a national disgrace.
