He probably won't be King for very long before Williams takes over.
I think Charles is a wimp and slightly off. He has allowed his mother to take over his life and make him miserable. I am glad he finally is with Camilla, but if he loved her, he should have taken a stand and not been sneaking around with her.
I think William is a fine man and he will do very well as King. He is more in tune with the common people. William's son is third in line.
@Carmie I don't think she will ever "hand it over." She will die as queen and then Charles will ascend to the throne. Meantime, she will delegate more and more of her official duties, as she has been for the past few years.
I totally agree and Charles will have to wait until she does. He's not getting any younger. I think she is quite stubborn or doesn't trust Charles' judgement.
@Carmie I don't think this is it at all. Although she's had to change and modernize somewhat over the years, Elizabeth is a real traditionalist. It was quite a scandal when her uncle abdicated. I think the queen believes in the natural order of succession and that her successor assumes the role of king upon her death and not before. I don't think she would give up the thrown to Charles or anyone else - that's not the natural way things work and again, she's a great traditionalist. She will see her role as queen out to the very natural end of it---- and not before. She is not one to give up her duties she was born into.

Agreed.
The Queen will stay on the THRONE until she dies, and then Charles will sit on the THRONE.

well...that's easy for you to say, isn't it. He had a lot pressure and thousands of years of history on his shoulders. One could also say that Diana should have had the brains to know that loveless, arranged marriage to man almost 20 years her senior would never be a happy marriage. But neither one had a crystal ball at their disposal.

@chrystaltree wrote:Why wouldn't he be? He married the love of his life and Camilla has been one of the "work horses" of the royal family. She takes the job very seriously and works very hard; much like Princess Anne. She was accepted by the public long ago and they think very highly of her. I'm not convinced that she will not be given the title of Queen when Charles takes the thrown.
And I've seen just the opposite ..... that many will never accept Camilla. She can be a work horse, but that doesn't mean people like her ..... have you never read anything about her excessive drinking?

excess drinking. never heard that, but i can believe it.

I've never heard anything about Camilla and excess drinking. But they used to say that about the Queen Mother, and people still adored her

I know that this is the traditional way to do things, but no one expected the kings and queens to live so long. The queen mother was maybe 101 when she passed and the queen must be about 90 years of age now.
I have to say that I would rather see her than Charles on the throne.

I don't see QE2 'retiring'. As others have said, the tradition is to serve until the end of one's life. I suspect she will do the same. I don't think it has anything to do with her trust in Charles or her stubborness, but has more to do with the the norm not being for for a reigning British monarch to 'retire'. While there's been specuation that Charles will abdicate in favor of William, I don't see it happening, though who knows. When Charles married Camilla, it was announced that she would not become 'queen' but would be given the designation 'consort'. She was not 'styled' the Princess of Wales, as it was apparenlty felt the public at the time would not accept her 'replacing' Diana as the Princess of Wales nor accept her as the future queen, and so the title of Duchess of Cornwall (given that Charles is also the Duke of Cornwall) is used. Whether or not these many years down the road the royals will stick with the plan not to 'crown' her when Charles ascends to the throne is anyone's guess. I don't know the current 'rules' and while it seems clear that men marrying a queen are not designated as 'king', I believe, though could be wrong, there have been examples of women marrying kings obtaining the designation as 'queen' without the 'consort' label.

I agree but I don't think you can really stand up to those people.
I suppose you can but not without major consequences.
