You may already know all of these things -- but here are some suggestions and some things to keep in mind:
It can take months for cats to recuperate from any type of surgery. Just the effects of the anesthesia alone can take them months to recuperate from. It isn't uncommon for cats to take 6 months or more to fully recuperate from surgery, tooth extractions, cleanings.
It can also take months for a cat to recuperate from an illness or from a round of antibiotic that was prescribed for the illness.
He isn't that old comparatively speaking. In cat years, he is about 49 years old (from page 567, Comparative Age of Cats and Humans, Cat Owners Veterinary Handbook-- third edition.) Just letting you know that he is a middle aged cat, not a geriatric cat.
Talk to your vet about adding a vitamin and mineral supplement to his diet such as Nutri-Cal or Spectrin For CATS. Nutri-Cal is in gel form, easy to give a little on your finger and Spectrin is best given in a little syringe or dropper.
Antibiotics kill all good bacteria as well as the bad bacteria so a probiotic may be needed by your cat to help regenerate the good bacteria in your cats gut. FORTIFLORA is generally recommended by vets to add to cats canned food. It has the good bacteria your cat needs to regenerate the good bacteria to help his GI tract regain it's vitality.
Also, no sugar plain yogurt can help your cat regain good bacteria in his gut. I give my cats about 1/2 teaspoon in a little rubber tipped spatula.
My vet recommended L-Lysine, 250 mg. twice a day crushed and put into my cats food. Ask your vet about using L-Lysine to help strengthen his immune system.
It's always a good idea to run everything by your vet. That's what I do. Ask your vet about a vitamin & mineral supplement, a probiotic, yogurt and L-Lysine.
Hope this helps. All the best to you and your kitty Boo Boo. Take care.
Wonderful advice! My son swears by the foriflora..I also give Emmy plain yogurt..I take 2000 mg of Lysine daily..its builds the immune system and prevents herpes. I didn't know I could give it to Emmy! You're such a good mommy to your babies! Will pray for Boo Boo!

Please keep us posted. I will surely pray for your furbaby! In the meantime, you may want to get a full chem panel done at the vet's to be sure you aren't missing something hidden and the values are where they should be....

Good news! Boo is back to his old, funny and sweet self. He's eating well and seems to feel a lot better. I don't know if I mentioned it, that Boo did see the vet on (I think) Monday. She had planned to give him an injection of an antibiotic that's effective for two weeks. However, she decided not to, since he's doing well and always reacts strongly to shots. He's getting only wet food; he misses his dry snacks, but he's getting used to canned food only.
Thank you all so much for your affectionate concern about my baby boy!
