If something has 600 views, that doesn't mean 600 people.
Edited: Doesn't mean 600 different people.

O.K., but how can they tell how many times a particular post was viewed?
The count for the OP is the cumulative total of how many times the thread was opened or refreshed not an indication that an individual post was read. The count in subsequent posts would be calculated the same way with the newest post having the least number of "views".
Ah, mystery solved! Thanks!

View counts can serve several purposes. On some forums associated with a business (unfortunately not QVC) posters who regularly draw a large number of views can get rewards (free shipping on orders, discounts, etc.) or they can get upgraded status on the forum. For forum adminstrators view counts can be a valuable tool to sort out the more valued posters and reward them in some manner. Forums exist to draw eyes to the website. If there are posters who draw more eyes to the site, then they're valued posters and you don't necessarily want to alienate them.
For forum users, view counts can also be pretty relevant. If you post a quesiton and you're dying for an answer. You can check the view count to see how many people have viewed the post. If the view count is one or two, then chances are that's why you don't have an answer. If the view count is five hundred and no one's answered, you might need to look elsewhere for guidance.
These days every piece of data anyone can collect has some value to someone.
