Never paid any attention to the "count" and didn't even realize that the number of views was posted below our names.

How can anyone know how many times a single post was viewed unless you click on that post to reply or something?

It seems crazy to me that there are ove 600 "views" on a lot of posts (since I just started looking) and wonder, not only how they can tell how many views a post has, but who are all those people?  Are there that many posters here?

Re: Post "View" Count

[ Edited ]

I'm pretty sure it's been there ever since the change almost two years ago.

If something has 600 views, that doesn't mean 600 people.

Someone mentioned this feature on a thread I saw earlier today and it prompted me to look.  I think I recall that there used to be a view count number before the forums went to the "new" system, but I never gave it any thought.

I have too much time on my hands today.  hahahahaha

O.K., but how can they tell how many times a particular post was viewed?

I suppose every time someone clicks on a thread, each post there at the time gets a new tick mark.  I just made that up; I really don't know :-) Sounds plausible.

Well, the software knows where I've left off in a thread, because it takes me to the next unread reply when I go back. It must be able to tell who's read what, and when.

I just wonder what the point of view counts.

Wrong is still wrong just because you benefited from it.

The count for the OP is the cumulative total of how many times the thread was opened or refreshed not an indication that an individual post was read.  The count in subsequent posts would be calculated the same way with the newest post having the least number of "views".
