With respect to the tree on a neighbors property, I'd hope they were advised in advance and given the opportunity to address the matter themselves... If they weren't they probably should have been. If they were and didn't choose to address the situation then that's on them. The tree work aside, if a number of the neigbors seem to be put out at some level with the OP then there's more going on than we can know.
I strongly suspect that the neighbors being put out is due to a 50 year old. presumably healthy tree being removed and it would not matter which neighbor was removing such a tree.

Bottom line is...it’s your property....you can cut down a tree if you want to!

Just go about your business. You can’t control her reactions only your own. Ignore her.

Tales I could tell!!!! My neighbor was sawing tiles on his driveway.....and the sparks set my front yard on fire. He refused to accept any responsibility.........and didn't even offer to help me dig out the dead LARGE shrubs. It took me a week.....in the blazing Arizona summer sun.

I know it's easier said than done, but I'd ignore them. It's none of their business what you do with your yard. Of course, unless it's illegal.
My mother has neighbor tree drama, I've told her the same thing. She has a hedge that divides her house from the neighbors. It was getting my too tall and grew to the street. You can't see when backing out the driveway. I told the landscaper to cut it back six feet from the street and take it down a foot. Well the neighbor went nuts and complained to any neighbor that would listen, that we took away her privacy. She never comes out of the house and it's a dead end street with little traffic.

I cannot imagine ever getting upset about such things. It all sounds rather immature, to be honest. Do what you have to do and forget about it.

Let them talk one has to "protect" their property.
Case in point, our community developer planted these maple & oak trees 25+ years ago.
They are on front lawns, sides & the idea was they'd grow to "canopy" over the streets. Nope, just big & overgrown. Over the years many homeowners have removed them, therefore, now the ones that are left are just big mess! There are also lots of pine trees that are too tall, infected or dying in common areas and in our backyards.
Many are full of dead limbs (and not talking little limbs either) and are growing over roofs, breaking off in storms & just dirty trees.
Slowly, homeowners including me are having them removed. Oh boy you should hear the comments and complaints from the "tree" huggers. My neighbor being one of them😠 who is a snowbird who hasn't been here since August, 2018.
I filed a complaint because her tree branches are now hanging over onto my property. During our last storm a large limb crashed to the common area alongside our house, one big limb came down onto our driveway. These trees are constantly dropping debris, delivery/garbage trucks are hitting hanging limbs & breaking them off, etc. and then these limbs are in the street OR just barely hanging from the trees! I hired a tree contractor ($$$$) to remove all the tree limbs affecting my property. She is upset ... oh well🤷♀️.
Now, everyone is removing the pine trees that are either dead or infected. I just don't understand where some peoples' "common sense" is🙄.
I'm doing prevention for my property and that's all that matters. Of course, we've got those "busy bodies" who need to add their 2 cents
Living in a gated over 55 HOA community is like living in a "fish bowl" they know everything you're doing OR they make it their business. Honestly I ignore them 🙄

Stories of unpleasantness with neighbors makes me appreciate mine.
Dorian looming on the horizon we met as always with a spirit of we are in this together and whoever needs help your not alone. Grateful for the close friendships experienced living here the last three years.
