47 years ago, it snowed in South Florida for only time in recorded history

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Exactly 47 years ago, snow fell in South Florida for the only time in recorded history.

WPTV First Alert Weather chief meteorologist Steve Weagle said that on Jan. 19, 1977, enough snow accumulated to cover the ground and be recorded in weather history books.

The National Weather Service said snow was seen as far south as Homestead, along with reports of snow mixed with rain in Freeport, Bahamas.

Weather observers spotted flakes in West Palm Beach, LaBelle, Hollywood, and the Royal Palm Ranger Station in deep south Miami-Dade County.

Re: Possible snow in Florida

It HAS snowed at Malibu Beach in the past...and we even get some in Phoenix if the atmospheric conditions are right....

Yes, it snowed in Miami!  January 19, 1977. I had to scrape the snow off my car window to get to my school, Coconut Grove Elementary.

Of course, I didn't have a snow scrapper so I managed to remove some icy snow from my window with my bare hands. No gloves. Well, I couldn't really see out of the window and ran over a small tree!!!

My husband always loves to tell this story.

If your car has a heater...it also has a DEFROSTER...(since you might travel to other climates)

@Zaimee @Marp I remember when it snowed in South Florida in 1977. That was the first time I have seen snow since I moved here in 1969 from the Northeast.

I can’t imagine going on the Internet to do research if snow fell in 1993 in a certain town in Florida..
Who would care about a weather incident from over 30 yrs ago?🤔

I did @KKlim because i live here about 20 miles away and did not recall it snowing in Anna Maria Island, so I looked on the internet to get the history. I cant understand why you find that difficult to comprehend. I didnt drive to the library or newstation. It was a couple of clicks regarding what would be fascinating ( to me) occurance that never normally happens in my area.

Re: Possible snow in Florida

Georgia just got our second winter storm watch in as many weeks for Tuesday into Wednesday. I ordered a new snow shovel a week ago and it still has not shown up. Amazon must have intercepted it as a wrong order. 🤣

I remember being in college in Port St. Lucie which is just north of West Palm. It hit 50 degrees one day and they went on the intercom to announce they had started serving hot chocolate in the cafeteria. This Jersey girl and my professor from Michigan laughed so much we couldn't start class. Between that and my fellow classmates showing up in hats and gloves (50 degrees!), we had never been so entertained.

I don't think ANYONE (who experienced it) will ever forget the "Blizzard of '67" in Chicago.

You're right! I remember that '67 blizzard well. I was 6 years old and the shoveled snow was taller than me, tall walls of shoveled snow my folks cleared for the sidewalk opening. I can still recall walking from the doorway of our house and then down the sidewalk of the snow wall corridor.  This after a rare, balmy 65 degrees in Chicagoland, just two days earlier. Unusual weather swing for sure.

@mormel20.  That would be so much fun for so many people, especially the kids.  Hope it materializes as it probably wouldn't be much.

In 1977 it snowed in the Tampa area enough that the schools closed for the day.  The kids were able to make a small snowman and numerout snow balls!
