I live in Philly and was caught up in this yesterday. I was on my way home from work going to pick up my son. As I got 3 blocks away from the shooting I heard and saw cop cars whizzing by me. Then I got to the intersection of 16th & Erie (one block from suspect's house) there were helicopters overhead, and police cars flying by. I was stuck at the light at 16th & Erie waiting to cross (there were dozens and dozens of cop cars on Erie Ave) when I heard about 30 gun shots. My car was the 2nd car at the light, I was beeping my horn and yelling at the car in front of me to go through the light so we could get out of there. When he pulled up I put my foot to the gas pedal and floored it through the red light and crossed Erie Ave to get out of there. My heart was beating so fast, my hands were shaking. I was just so thankful no gunshots came through my window. In total over 100 shots were fired. He was shooting at the cops up until the nighttime. I had no idea how big this thing was until I got home and turned on the news. Narcotics officers were attempting to serve a warrant. They got as far as the kitchen and were ambushed. Some of them had to jump out of the window to escape. My cousin is a police captain and he was on the news at Temple Hospital when they were giving updates of the officers' injuries. Thank God no officers of bystanders were killed.

The perpetrator had been arrested about a dozen times previously, starting at age eighteen and on several occasions for firearms violations. He was 36 years old and clearly someone who didn't care what the laws were. People say the old three strike laws were unfair, and in some cases they were, but there has to be some way to take flagrant offenders like this guy out of circulation and keep them out of circulation. If not, then things like this will continue. Chances are he has a juvenile record also. We're never going to solve the crime problem in this country if we keep releasing career criminals back into society. At what point do we say, "This guy/gal just doesn't get it" and lock them up and throw away the key?
