Re: Please explain to me WHY the error at the Oscars is such a big deal.

[ Edited ]

Why it was a big deal is because one group had the joy of thinking they won, but seconds later they were bummed to find out they didn't win.

The other group, Moonlight, had the joy of winning taken away from them.  First they felt they lost, after that they didn't know what to believe.  It wasn't a clean win for them.

Emotional ups and downs are always stressful.

@SahmIamI didn't read all of the replies but this is Hollywoods eqivalent to the SuperBowl so it is like the wrong score has been given at that lol!Smiley Very Happy

To me it was the most interesting part of the show.

@SahmIam   It must be a big deal or you'd have just posted your question on one of the other seemingly thousands of threads on this board about the Oscar Best Movie screw-up. It must be important to you or you wouldn't have started an entire new thread about it.  Smiley Tongue

The root cause of the mistake is clearly the guy from PW....NOT Warren Beatty or Faye Dunaway.  In fact, I wonder if PW will now lose their contract with the Academy.  May not be a big deal to some of us, but it sure is a big deal to the Academy and to PW.

It goes to show you what lousy actors Warren and Faye are that they couldn't use their craft to improvise and find a way to give the guy from PW the heads up.  NO, they chose to allow the incorrect winner to climb onto the stage.

Exactly my thoughts...I would think that Faye and/or Warren would have clarified the winner's name before announcing it!!

And I think that the reason people are so upset at the PW employee is that he let down his employers, the award winner, the awards staff and the awards audience by not performing his job duty. Most companies do not allow an employee to use their private cell phone for private business while on the job.  When I worked, I know that could be a reason to be let go.

Warren knew something was off and Faye grabbed the card and read it without looking at it carefully. It all happened sooo fast- too fast! I read where the Oscars might change accounting firms. That would be the most reasonable outcome!

I agree with your statement.   Instead of Warren hanging out his tongue and looking back-and-forth between Faye, the card, and audience, ALL HE HAD TO DO was look at the outside of the envelope which CLEARLY had printed on it:  Best Actress in a Motion Picture.

Then he should have said to the audience "we have the incorrect envelope" and just stand and wait until the correct envelope is brought out.

And don't get me started on Faye Dunaway.....she's been injected with so much plastic in her face that her brain cells weren't functioning.

SHE was the one who said "La La Land".  She can't read????

Because Hollywood and celebreties are toally self-absorbed. I read what Shirley McLain said about it. Now I see why she acts...drama queen. While no one likes a mix-up like that, the world certainly has bigger issues. This whole thing is why I avoid award shows. What other industry has award shows to tell themselves how wonderful they are? None.

Many industries have awards banquets/conferences/events to celebrate the best engineer, scientist, journalist, novelist, bowler, football team, etc., too many to mention.  The difference is in the audience for the events.

The audience for those I mentioned above are friends, family, coworkers, interested parties.  The same applies to the Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, etc., the interested parties are the people who go to the movies, watch the tv shows, and buy the music, so their awards are televised.  They are no different from everyone else, they want to be recognized for their work.

And if you had read through this entire thread, you would have known why I asked.

I haven't noticed or opened any of the other threads because it wasn't on my radar. But again, you would have known that if you had read the entire thread.

Sorry to keep this thread going, but I simply cannot blame Beatty of Faye.  It was clearly the fault of the PW folks who should have done their job properly in the first place.  They obviously cannot handle the "glitter" of being among the "stars" and were unable to carry out their appointed task.  No blaming Beatty here.  Sorry....JMHO.

Are you kidding?

The VP of the accounting firm PWC was so busy tweeting a picture of himself with Emma Stone who had just won, that he handed the wrong envelope to Warren Beaty.

That is disgraceful. He has just one job. Hand the right envelope--which are labeled with the particular award-- to the presenter.

No, I'm not kidding.

Did anyone die? No. Was National Security breached? No. Did hundreds of people lose their homes? No.

We're talking MOVIES. Hollywood. So again, please explain to me WHY event is causing so much drama and hysteria on the part of Hollywood and celebrities because I'd really like to know.

Why did people become apoplectic when Steve Harvey announced the wrong Miss Universe?

I don't know.

I felt badly for the embarassment it caused, but I kind of got over it by the time I turned the TV off.
