@Love to Run @Squirrels Are Trash I was able to locate this again. I thought your students might enjoy it. There may be a video of the interaction out there somewhere.

Re: Pi Day is Today 3.14

[ Edited ]

My sister is a 7th/8th grade math teacher, and she always has to open the school day with a math talk on Pi day--an assignment about which she is ambivalent, as she is usually running to catch up after spring break and is requested to bake pies for the school.

Hawking was such an extraordinary person. Talk about making lemonade when he was handed a horrifying diagnosis.  He coped.  He appeared (via holodeck) as himself in an episode of "Star Trek, The Next Generation" and in quite a few episodes of "Big Bang Theory."

He also did voiceovers for "The Simpsons" and "Futurama."  In real life he served as Director of Theoretic Cosmology at Canbridge U in England while carving out a niche in pop-science and joining the icons of pop culture at the same time.  He made science cool.

An extraordinary man in every way.

I know this only through my sister, but it was Archimedes of Syracuse who first attempted to calculate Pi (287-212 BCE).
