Something I find annoying and rude is when people call  and say,  "your number came up, why did you call me?, or  "this number called me. What do you want?"  I even had someone argue with me that I called them. Kept saying "yes you called me" to which I replied  "No, I did not!"   I've never called back an unknown number and say  "what do you want."    smh

My pet peeve is when someone calls me and asks who I am.  That person is calling me. He/she should be identifying themselves to me not the other way around.  I learned that when I call someone to identify myself and then to ask for a particular individual.

@lgfan Yeah, I always identify myself right away too. I've had people call me and start in with a long convo or want to know something and don't even say who they are. I have to ask who it is.

@lgfan I can't stand that! My answer is always a very cold "to whom did you wish to speak?"! Usually the caller then falls all over themselves apologizing, lol!

Another one when I used to work as an admin assistant was "Is So-and-So in?" That's none of your (caller's) business! The correct question is "May I speak to So-and-So?"

If asked if someone was in (and if they were indeed in) I always just answered "Yes", followed by silence, and made the caller ask if they could speak to them.

@KKJ @If I don't recognize a number, I don't answer. If someone with an unknown number calls and doesn't leave a message, they get blocked.

I'm not a trained seal so don't expect me to act like one. If I know your number and don't answer, you need to leave me a message if you want me to return your call...

My next door neighbor only calls when she wants something. If I call her, she won't answer and almost never returns a phone message. I missed a ca from her at 5:15pm. She had to be watching for me to get home and dialed immediately. My phone was still silenced from work so I missed the call. No phone message. I'm not calling her.

Agree!  We let the answering machine do its job.  Never had the problem that the OP and others seem to have had.  Just don't answer the phone unless the number is recognized.

I just got a call from a Voice machine regarding an appointment I made with a new doctor for next week.

The message went on and on regarding all the information and identification and payment I must bring with me (isn't it wonderful!) and then proceeded to request that I press '3' to confirm the appointment at 2:00 pm, when I made the appointment weeks ago and it was for 1:00 pm, according to the woman I spoke with.

So now I will have to call their office tomorrow and ask what time my appointment actually is. And I'll probably have to wait for hours at their office anyway.

I can't stand making appointments!  LOL

Sometimes I do answer while the phone is ringing without waiting for voicemail to kick in.   If I do not recognize the voice, I hang up or disconnect before anyone can utter more than one word. I don't wait to hear what is going to be saId.   I also hang up or disconnect if I do not hear a voice after, at most, 3 seconds.  I don't say "hello, hello, hello".  No patience for hesitation.

The dentist that my husband goes to has such a strange way of confirming appointments.

They call and leave a message that his appointment is at such and such day and time and then they request that he call them back to verify that he is still able to make the appointment.  It's so annoying.  Why can't they just say to call back if unable to keep the appointment.  He's been going to the same dentist for years and they know he always makes his appointments.

My dentist, on the other hand, just leaves me an email and all I have to do is hit the link to verify that I will be at the appointment. It saves so much time.  They aren't having to call me and I'm not having to call them back.
