Mom,

The Haboobs are a fairly recent occurrence. They are nothing like the dust storms of years ago. I've been here 40 years and believe me wen I tell you there is a difference. The Haboob is an immense WALL of dust that moves slowly. It might even just sit over an area. One of them hovered over my area a few years ago. You couldn't really feel wind when you went outside, but the dust was so thick I couldn't even see my neighbors houses.

The media has nothing to do with making this phenomenon a big deal

Wow Terry, thanks for the info!!

P.S. I have a daughter named Terry!! {#emotions_dlg.thumbup}

cool! It's a name you don't hear that much these days. Is she a Theresa or Therese too?

Terry, my daughter's name is just Terry. She is named after my sister who's name is Therese. Is Therese your name? I think that's a beautiful name.

You're right about the spelling. I have always believed it was of French origin. I think I need to call my sis and ask. She lives in Phoenix. Smile

We get dust storms here in the Albuquerque area mostly in the spring but they're not that bad. You run to close the open windows but dust will still seep in through tiny cracks. My favorite experience is when it rains during a dust storm and your windshield is covered with mud. We used to get a lot of that in West Texas. You couldn't drive a block without using your windshield washers. Then you taste and feel grit in your mouth and on your skin.

She pronounces it Te-race (about as close as I can come to it). Her middle name is French spelling too. It's Marthe (not Martha). Can you tell we were very Catholic too? LOL

Our house is in the "East Valley" which is southeast of Phoenix proper. The haboobs are scary and leave a lot of dust and believe me, on any given day, we have dust. We are currently back in Illinois but my SIL sent me pictures. They live in San Tan Valley on the border of Maricopa and Pinal counties. People have been killed on I-10 when the haboobs struck.

We had to hose down our property after these dust storms.

I agree. I grew up in Phoenix as well. They were just called dust storms and we went on our way. Although, they might be bigger and more frequent now than they were twenty or thirty years ago. That's just my impression. I may be wrong.

I also was raised in AZ. Lived around the greater Phoenix valley (Scottsdale, Coolidge, Surprise) when I was little (in the 1950's), then lived in eastern AZ near Willcox until I was 18. We had dust storms, but I do not remember these "haboobs." Same thing with "monsoons."

I never heard that term til much later in life and I always associated it with places like Asia and Africa. Monsoon pertains to the wind patterns that bring the rain, NOT the rain itself.

As for haboobs...our weather guy on Ch. 4 in Tucson went out of his way to NOT say haboob when talking about this one yesterday. He kept saying "dust storm." {#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

But regardless of what they are called, they really can be very dangerous....to drivers on the highways and to people with respiratory problems.
