Mom,
The Haboobs are a fairly recent occurrence. They are nothing like the dust storms of years ago. I've been here 40 years and believe me wen I tell you there is a difference. The Haboob is an immense WALL of dust that moves slowly. It might even just sit over an area. One of them hovered over my area a few years ago. You couldn't really feel wind when you went outside, but the dust was so thick I couldn't even see my neighbors houses.
The media has nothing to do with making this phenomenon a big deal

Me: Wow.....what do you have to do to prepare for this? Does the sand get into the house? AC unit? Car motor? Etc?
Him: the car engine gets a little dusty, you change the filters for the AC often and no it doesn't get in the house. no preparation for it, it comes suddenly but you get a little warning from the news.
Me: How often does it happen?
Him: it happens more during what they call "Monsoon Season" heat of the summer....
Someone else: they mentioned on the morning news that we'd probably get some blowing dust, and we only got a light shower this time. monsoons are equal to the hurricane season on the East Coast (June 15-Sep 15). The high wind usually comes first and then storm comes through but it only lasts for less than an hour, if that. We get 2/3 of our rain for the year during these few months. Some years we get pounded, other's we get very little at all. This is only the 2nd time we've had rain here in the East Valley in over 3 months.

No. It's not "overblown".
See my post to Momof4 above.
It's nothing like you've ever seen before. The dust the Haboob brings in is reddish in color. When the one sat over my house for about an hour, the air was as red as if there was a fire. I had red dust coating my trees, rocks, patio furniture and roof the next morning. it looked like a moonscape. Nothing like a regular dust storm.

I've never seen anything like this before. If it's overblown, what is that photo showing? Do you think it's photoshopped?
It looks like something out a sci-fi movie!
