I think people can get carried away with talking about themselves and over sharing.

I figure a lot of what we read here is simpy lies anyway don't you? I have a few posters in mind who tell some pretty big ones. And we know that by just reading what they've written over the years.
They there are the ones with alternate identities who sometimes slip up and post under the wrong nic and usually get outed by some smartie here!
I'm tall, thin, beautiful, an Olympic Gold Medal athlete and wealthy like "some others" here, but never been known as "easy." What am I doing wrong????

When I was working, although I might have said what I did for a living and the *general* area where I lived, I was deliberately never specific enough to be pinpointed to less than 500,000 population. This was because, when the "new forum" was actually new, there were people active on the forum (and who are probably still reading, and/or posting under another name) who would have loved/would love to do me mischief or harm just for the heck of it. Now that I'm not working - feh. And if anyone tries to mess with my identity, LOL it wouldn't get them any $$ or anything else for their trouble.
But yeh - don't ever think those who have access to this forum are all lovable, trustworthy sweethearts.

Because I say my family owns Heinz ketchup and I live at 1414 Fifth Avenue, NYC and I post a picture of the new car my husband bought, doesn't make any of it true.
These forums are fickle. I've seen posters chastised for posting pictures of their grandchildren, their homes, themselves and whatever. Some are told by the throngs to take them down while others are told how cute the kids are, how beautiful their home is and how pretty they are.

I've only seen two people here put up identifying information and both were told by numerous other posters it was dangerous, take it down.
One became angry and never got over it with those who tried to explain why to her. The other just faded away.

That poster should be posting her grandkids soon. It's been awhile.

I think (hope) by now that sometimes the personal "facts" posted on these forums aren't always truth. Most have seen the tv ad with the "French model" and realize some of what we read is less than factual.
But, that's not really the point here. If someone offers inaccurate info and another person is keeping notes and tries to track them down... the tracker won't find anything/anyone. But if someone provides real information here... they can be located and possibly harmed. Sure, with all the people and all the posts the likelihood is a small percentage. But if even only one person might be harmed (and we've had a few cases here in which posters have been harmed), then in my opinion it's worth it to try and warn everyone.

There was at least one person on an Amazon forum who thoughtlessly revealed too much information *without* revealing specifics. Someone (or multiple someones) out to stop her posting completely (long story) wrote directly to her employer with "evidence" of some supposed moral or mental issue in an effort to get her fired.

Oh, how terrible, @Moonchilde. I can recall a situation here, a few years ago, when one poster actually stated she had figured out where another poster worked... and said she was going to call (or visit) there, and it was said with quite a threatening tone. It's easy for us to become a little bit too comfortable on social media and to forget there are some dreadfully unstable people out there watching.
