It's not just homeless and the down and out who do this.
Plenty of people who restore furniture and other items pull their cars over and do this as do many sellers on Ebay who dumpster dive through various neighborhoods looking for anything to sell on Ebay, Etsy and their own garage sales.
HGTV always feature aspiring designers who pick through trash too to find vintage treasures.

I agree with you, in fact, I made both of those same points early on.
1) That some people are looking for furniture finds and antiques, and
2) It's not always the homeless, but from my experience it usually is, at least here in the city.

Awww I would be in tears, too! Not only were you tired and disgusted, but that act must have also felt like a personal assault.
My only exposure comes from teaching teens from lower income backgrounds. Some are in need of psych meds and they don't think correctly.
I tried to make teens who were just thoughtlessly messy with their lunch garbage realize that this was "our yard" and they were dumping on it.
When thoughtlesness is added together with NEED, you have a real desperate, unthinking dangerous situation.
We save our lamps and some nicer items for the trash men. Although one told my DH that they weren't supposed to take anything, he came back and got the lamp.
I am so sorry about people acting trashy and messy.

You are right .. it felt personal. I didn't think of that until I read this and immediately it made a connection.

It is disgusting to disrespect someone's property in that way. Our yard has a long street frontage and we get lots of litter. I always try to pick it up quickly to prevent it from building up and looking like we don't care. The worst is cups of tobacco spit (we live in the country). Beer cans and liquor bottles upset me, too, especially because it tells me someone is on the road mentally impaired.

@sparklestar No, 'disgusting' is the right name for people who do things like that. We haven't had that happen, maybe they think our trash doesn't look worth digging through. Our city says if it's at the curb anyone can take it but they don't say opening it and leaving a mess is ok.
Sorry, you had to endure this kind of treatment. Let's hope it doesn't happen again. Sending good thoughts to you.

It is disgusting and not unheard of. We always kept our trash in the garage until late in the night before pick up day. One man's trash is another man's treasure and some people drive around looking for treasure.

Treasure or trash, I just wish they would leave it as they found it and not strewn all over the place
There's a reason I bagged it up.

I haven't read the entire thread, so excuse me if I repost something already 'said.'
It's important that you DO NOT put any financial information in your trash. Credit card receipts, old tax documents, medical bills, anything with your personal information. This is one way Scammers get information out there. Paper shredders are a good investment.
Also, if you make a major purchase, don't put the boxes and packaging out on the curb, don't allow people to know what you have in your home. Tear the boxes into smaller pieces to fit inside a trash bag or bin.
