Penn State names 18th President

— Penn State has officially named its next president, Florida State’s Eric Barron.

Barron, who has strong ties as a longtime professor and dean here, was introduced Monday after Penn State’s trustees unanimously approved his appointment. Barron has been the president at Florida State since 2010, and he will succeed Rodney Erickson, who, instead of retiring, took over the reins in November 2011 as the Jerry Sandusky scandal rocked the university and community.

“We are simply unbeatable when we’re working together for a common purpose,” Barron told the trustees. “I’ve taken those two Penn State traits — the push for excellence and the power of community — everywhere I have gone.”

Barron will be the 18th president in Penn State’s history and will oversee a world-class research institution with more than 98,000 students, a $4.4 billion budget and one of the largest alumni communities in the country.

He’ll also be in charge of a university still recovering from the Sandusky scandal and one that has ranked among the most expensive public institutions in the country.

Barron, 62, was given a five-year contract with a base salary of $800,000, double what his salary is at Florida State. He will get $200,000 bonuses each year, too, plus a $1 million payment at the end of his contract.

Barron will start at Penn State on or before May 12.
