There's something very strange IMO about a 40 year old man hinting that he wants money for picking up pine cones in your yard! No, I would not pay him...giving a man that age a $5 bill seems weird, and it's not worth $20! I would be polite, as you were, and thank him for doing it but letting him know it was not necessary. Let it go at that. If you pay him, he'll find other projects to take on at your home without asking.
I got the idea that he's developmentally delayed. Nothing about this indicates that he's a normal 40 year old.

Could you speak to his Mom? This is a difficult situation and I would not know how to handle it. Hubbs says extortion. LOL
If he is special needs, his mom could have suggested he do it to make some money.

@Daisy Sunflower If he is special needs, his Mom should know better than that.

Since your neighbor volunteered his services as a grown adult I would not pay him. He may even feel insulted by such an action or it would invite him to do other chores for you that you did not rquest his help. You can make him cookies and a thank you card if you like.

I would rather give him some cash rather than have to go through the effort of making cookies. Just making fun of myself a little. Path of least resistance for me is the quickest and easiest way-cash.

At the tail end of her post, the OP said she has paid him in the past to do yard work. So it wasn't out of the blue. I think he didn't understand that he should ask her if she wanted him to do the work before doing it. I doubt that any mother would tell her son to do some work and then pester the neighbor for money.

Nope I would not pay him.

@Biftu There seems to be some confusion over who is 40 years old. Is it your neighbor? Or his son (the one who picked up pine cones)?
For the record, if a boy did the work, I'd let him have $5 and request advance notice the next time he "worked" for me. If a man did the work, I'd apologize and send him on his way.

@ValuSkr In message 43 she literally calls him a man. In her first post she says he is in his 40's, referring to him as her neighbor's son. So I do think he is an adult man, not a boy.
