@KateE wrote:I was there at one point in my life and it was terrible, no savings and many sleepless nights until I made my way out little by little and it all came down to choices, smart one's. I see co-workers who claim the same paycheck to paycheck rhyme all day long, yet they have fancy cell phones, buy cars they cannot afford, get them repoed and then buy again all the while crying about their situation. I had to get real with myself about my future and that had to do with MY choices, I like having money in the bank, investments that will help in later years more than the next big "anything" I'm told I need to have.
I have to say, it's hard in the world today as everyone want's what has taken many people years to achieve. It is a money driven world, so many see what others have and want the same for themselves, thing is they don't get the pleasure of actually seeing the bill box of the person they envy.
This is it in a nutshell for a large number of people in this country. Young people today expect to have what their parents or grandparents took decades to acquire, but have it a year or two after graduation.
Middle age people often feel the need to keep up with the Joneses or simply treat themselves for all their hard work, at the expense of thinking of their future savings/earning potential.
We are a consumer driven nation, and people think they need to be spending money every day. People think it normal and necessary to upgrade anything from clothing to cars, to electronics, to home decor on a routine and regular basis and often do it on credit with mounting interest and fees. People who live close to the edge often want (and think they deserve) the same things and in the same quantity that people who earn high incomes have.
There was a day when many people realized the restraints of their particular economic status at any given time, and lived within it. The advent of easy credit and the ability to walk away from one's debt contributes greatly to people not being financially astute, as well as the huge safety net that once didn't exist, and forced people to be more cautious with their finances and economic decisions.

@Noel7 wrote:How can people read the news or watch news on TV and not know cell phones save lives?
A few years ago there was a family lost in the mountains in the freezing cold. The father tried to walk out and died on the way.
The mother stayed in the car with the two children. They were found and saved when authorities were alerted by relatives they were missing, and the police traced where they had been by cell phone calls pinging off of cell towers.
We've also had many stories of hikers lost and being saved because they had cell phones. On and on.
Oh @Noel7 this is what happened to me when my car died. They asked me what street I was on and even though I have lived in that area for over 50 years I didn't have a clue (what do I need street signs for?). Without the GPS on my phone (which I recently upgraded my ancient flip phone as I got rid of my landline to save money) I don't know what I would have done.
I am not at all a phone person but I was amazed at how they found me faster than I could scramble to tell them where I was . . .
But, come on, it happens so infrequently. *eyeroll*
Note to someone special - THAT's sarcasm.
@QueenDanceALot I do not wish sitting on a cement curb for three hours for you my friend . . . .

Seriously, I never felt more alone in my life.
Good thoughts to you and your dance classes as I do miss hearing about them . . .
Hey, mtc! Sorry for the delayed response but I'm just now trying to catch up on some board reading. I can only imagine what it was like for you, sitting there all alone on the curb for hours. I am also one who thinks that in today's world a cell phone is a must (and of course we don't have to have the latest and greatest if we don't require that or don't have the $$ for it - I have a little dinosaur of a cell phone which does what I need it to. No bells and whistles that most people I know have and sometimes I'd like those things, but I must be too cheap
. It's actually cheaper than a landline (that didn't even work when we had power issues) that I no longer have.
I am so sorry you're having such a time with job hunting. It's brutal out there and if you're over a "certain age", well, I don't have to tell you. I wish you the best of everything and a good job very soon!
We just started Fall Semester dance class last nite - took a 2 week break after Summer classes. I'm still enjoying it so much, and am still overwhelmed a good deal of the time, dancing with girls so much younger and girls with so much more experience and training. But I learn something new every week! That has to be a good thing. I just love my teacher and the music she comes up with is so wonderful! It's always new and so many different genres and time signatures and her choreography is fabulous! I'm looking forward to the Semester and "nailing" more of the choreography - hahahahaha! I am so proud of myself when I can put some of the combinations together.
Last nite was Modern class (Love!!!) and Wednesday nite Ballet begins (Love and Hate!!! - hahaha - mostly LOVE!
Miss talking with you!

There are several ways to get to access to the Internet before someone jumps down my throat
You are right about this. Many jobs are only accessible online. Public libraries are one way to have internet access for free.
At the library here you have reserve a spot (whatever is available), and can be only on for one hour that day. I am not sure that you can print.
