The TV show from the 1960s was R-OO-T 66 not R-OUT 66.

Ont sounds classier than ant. In my area we say ant

He also frequently says "roof" in which the "oo" sound is like book, not tooth.
I am thinking it is a Midwestern thing-- hubs is from Illinois.
Hugh Beaumont, the actor who played "Ward Cleaver" also said "roof" that way. I think of it as a boyish, Midwestern, Tom Sawyer-charming accent.
I have a more generalized Great Lakes accent, in which we always said a "long o" (is that the proper term?) roof and route.
Born and raised in NY (Westchester County)...same pronunciation here, long "o"

I was told that you pronounce it either way and is appropriate but I say r-out and if I pronounce it like root, I'm talking about a plant. I'm from the midwest.

Yes, a little spell check is definitely in order here. But you know what, I don't think it works on thread titles.
Bummer.

It's R-out and Ant for me! Born and raised in New York (Westchester County).

When I refer to the numbered highways in NJ, I say root.

Sonic Drive thru here in So Cal sells a forty-four ounce drink called the Route44. You can order it by calling it a R-OUT 44 but when they read back your order you can bet it will be called a R-OOT 44!
You're right...the place to get your kicks was "ROOT"66 ![]()
