Ever try standing at the edge of a cliff? For those of us who get spooked driving next to one it's unthinkable. I've tried but I can't even get too near to the edge without getting the sensation of falling.

Well, and I watch a lot of real crime shows. Numerous times I've seen shows where one person pushed another off a cliff.

I know people who will stand right on the edge of a cliff. Kind of a 'thrill' thing. Nothing against it and good for them! But not this chicken! *shudder*

I can't even get in a glass elevator. I have walked 15 flights to avoid the one in downtown LA. Also, Nordstrom in SF has a glass sided, floating escalator . No way, had to walk forever to get to an elevator. I feel like I am falling. I think it is a control issue, LOL!

I didn't realize how much it bothered me until a trip out west to Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Yosemite, Sequoia, and others . . . IF I get too close to the edge without a railing I just get a weak feeling in my stomach . . . I have to stand a good 2 foot or so back from the edge.

Fix it? It's a winding scenic highway. People get in accidents because they aren't paying attention to their driving. Period.

No, it can't be "fixed" in many parts--because you've got the ocean on one side and steep hills on the other. It's a marvel that they were able to build it in the first place. So, yes, it is more dangerous than many other roads, and I don't mean to suggest that accidents could be eliminated entirely, but if people would put down their phones, drive slower, and pay more attention to driving, surely there would be fewer accidents. It's so easy to come flying around one of those corners, and if there is anyone stopped for any reason, BOOM! You don't have enough time to react. But that sort of thing happens all the time, everywhere. *sigh*

Oh, those glass elevators! I was in Atlanta and went out with friends - they wanted to go to the restaurant at the top of Peachtree Plaza, in the glass elevator. I had had a drink, but it wasn't enough! I stood facing the building all the way up. However, after we had been in the revolving restaurant for an hour or two and I had another couple of drinks (I never did drink much socially and not at all now), I thoroughly enjoyed looking out over the city on the way down! I couldn't agree more. There are parts of PCH that actually go through "neighborhoods". People need to put their darn phones down and pay attention! People that are not familiar with the roads curves, come flying around those curves into head on traffic! I imagine this is true of any windy, irregular road. Everytime I take parts of the PCH, you can get a glimpse at certain points how much the cliff to the ocean, and the high wall on the opposite side have whittled away. 10 feet in places.

There are areas of Malibu and Big Sur, and the PCH by Cambria that have had the ocean side "built up". They use tons of rebar, and other materials, then lay this this ground down ( kind of looks like fibers and chewed up hemp rope) that grows into the hillside or cliff. It is amazing, but can't be done in many places.

Re: PCH (Pacific Coast Highway)

State Route 1 (SR 1) is a major north-south state highway that runs along most of the Pacific coastline of the U.S. state of California. Highway 1 has several portions designated as either Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), Cabrillo Highway, Shoreline Highway, or Coast Highway. Its southern terminus is at Interstate 5 (I-5) near Dana Point in Orange County and its northern terminus is at U.S. Highway 101 (US 101) near Leggett in Mendocino County. Highway 1 also at times runs concurrently with US 101, most notably through a 54-mile (87 km) stretch in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, and across the Golden Gate Bridge.

The highway is famous for running along some of the most beautiful coastlines in the USA, leading to its designation as an All-American Road. In addition to providing a scenic route to numerous attractions along the coast, the route also serves as a major thoroughfare in the Greater Los Angeles Area, the San Francisco Bay Area, and several other coastal urban areas.

SR 1 was built piecemeal in various stages, with the first section opening in the Big Sur region in the 1930s. However, portions of the route had several names and numbers over the years as more segments opened. It was not until the 1964 state highway renumbering that the entire route was officially designated as Highway 1. Although SR 1 is a popular route for its scenic beauty, frequent landslides and erosion along the coast have caused several segments to be either closed for lengthy periods for repairs, or re-routed further inland.

OMG, I know that escalator! {#emotions_dlg.scared} I took it once. Once, never again.

There was another downtown store, I can't think of the name of it at the moment, that had one that was worse somehow. It seemed to float on air and didn't go floor to floor so much as it went round and round through many stories of space. Also a one time event for me.

Why to they build such things? You and I can't be the only people who can't stand being on them.

I know we can't be the only ones. It can almost make you unstable trying to get on it. Stepping off that glass escalator is so weird. I was about in tears. One time, one floor trip for me! A saleslady on the second floor says she never takes it. Hahah,

The other escalator, could it be the old City Of Paris? Is Neiman's in there now? The glass elevator I was talking about is in the Saint Francis Hotel! it is also a bullet fast ride. It is so fast you leave your stomach on the first floor. Scary!

putting up the Christmas Tree in old City of Paris. Walking along those edges was horrible. The floors were creaky, uneven. Felt like I would fall over!

Re: PCH (Pacific Coast Highway)

Shoekitty, thanks for the history. It's called the Cabrillo Highway near where I live, but we usually just call it Highway 1. When I hear other people, usually tourists, call it the PCH...I know what they mean, but we don't use that term.

Really a nice photo, SK Smile It was a new store, not the City of Paris. I've never been back, as you might surmise, LOL.

The old Emporium had a high ceiling, too, but it never bothered me. The Big E {#emotions_dlg.biggrin} Do you remember Christmas rides on the roof at the Big E?
