Re: PCH (Pacific Coast Highway)

I used to love to drive/ride on the PCH - Highway 1. I'm more familiar with the section from The Bay Area up through the Sonoma and Mendocino coasts. There are a few scary patches. I miss it but we have our own cliff roads along the coast here too. And here they are called The Pali.

I just read there was an accident involving an oil tanker in that section by Jenner yesterday. Road closed for 20 hours.

I had no idea it was that close to the cliff. Zowie!

Oh, yeah! And dark at night.

*shudder* No place for street lights in places like that!

Hii CB, Noel and sid!

Omg, the last time I drove PCH I got on at Camarillo or Oxnard..anyway! I loitered, showing the grandkids around and stopping. It was dark by the time I got there. It is DARK out there! Nothing but headlights, is right! Then a headlight coming at you out of the dar. By the time I got to Santa Monica tunnel, and pulled onto the freeway it was commute hour. I had an anxiety attack as I pulled onto 8 lanes of bumper to bumper traffic. Then there are 8 lanes of headlights coming at you Northbound. Never again! I wanted to pull over and call for police escort. I was ready to let the 13 year old (at th time) drive, LOL! Swore like 10 sailors all the way to El Segundo. My youngest grandkid at the time (7) started crying and said, "am I going to see my Mom again?". As Curley would say from 3 stooges, "What an Experience! "

I can't imagine driving Mendicino at night. Yikes!

Re: PCH (Pacific Coast Highway)

It's not a big deal.....edited, in the Malibu area. Other areas might be worse.

I think Kanan or Malibu Cyn is scary at times.

Hi SK, I have been on that stretch, but not in several years.

Love Mendocino, but yes, yikes to the roads up there!

Re: PCH (Pacific Coast Highway)

Does anyone else find themselves leaning the opposite direction, away from the cliff side drop off when riding along those areas?

LOL I remember riding on some 2-lane mountain roads with horrible, steep drop offs, and I always felt myself leaning away from the drop off and toward the driver's side.

Re: PCH (Pacific Coast Highway)

I wonder why Bruce Jenner decided to use PCH that day while hauling that trailer, instead of using a different, safer/easier road.

Re: PCH (Pacific Coast Highway)

He lives in Malibu. I haven't been down there lately (shoekitty probably knows the area well), but PCH was probably closest to where he was going. In many cases it's actually going right through town.

Does he live in Malibu now that he moved out? The rest of the clan lives in Calabasas, or they did.

Re: PCH (Pacific Coast Highway)

i am only a part-time resident of southern california, but my s/o is a full time resident. we both avoid PCH as much as possible. i know i prefer to travel more inland when i can.
