Doesn't anyone here remember the inflationary period(s) of the 1970s-80s?   Or the long lines at gas stations?

When we bought our first home in 1978 (which we eventually sold after 40 years), our mortgage interest rate was 9.25  percent, and even rose while we were waiting to close on the house.

When I was selling real estate in the 1980s, I'd consult with a mortgage lender while writing a sales contract and within minutes be contacted by the same loan officer saying the mortgage rate had just been raised in the past few minutes.

Inflation was rampant.  Everyone sort of got used to it.

There were times when home prices remained stagnant and other times when prices soared rapidly.  Such was life, and we're repeating the cycle now, I guess.

I went to a Five Below store once, and it was just not for me.

Dollar Tree, on the other hand, I like and I go there frequently.  I get all of my greeting cards there, and some seasonal decorations.  Also gift bags and tissue.  I love their wall stickers and use them in my laundry room, as they make me smile.  I change them out every few months.

I have found Healthy Choice canned soup there and even with the new price increase, they are still $1.00 per can.  I love banana Laffy Taffy and they are the only store that has it around here.

I also love to buy readers there.  I need a 3.25 or 3.50 and they have them.  I like to buy the paint with water books and coloring books for my grands.  I occasionally find some good hardback books there too.

@novamc1 : I do remember those times. I still have an embroidery piece I did while waiting in the gas lines. Maybe I should get it out and hang it up.

I live in Philly and we have plenty of Five Below stores here. Also, the dollar Tree near me went up to $1.25 last week.

Ran into my neighborhood Dollar Tree to pick up hard candy for work and each bag was still $1.

I'll hit Dollar General this month for their variety of hard candy and see if the prices have increased...

I agree with those who say even with the additional .25 increase some things are still a bargain. When the stores in my area announced the increase they mentioned they had held the dollar price for 30+ years. I know that's true because a friend was offered a chance to get in on a deal with two other gentlemen he worked with. When he was telling me about their meeting he was laughing because according to him that idea would never get off the ground. One of those men was a millionaire within five years.

I do remember those times and I don't want to do them again!  I remember the gasoline shortage and what a mess that was!  At that time I was traveling almost an hour each way for work and it was really scary and a nightmare thinking I would run out of gas and also waiting in long lines, etc.!
