This is a very interesting thread.  We moved here in 1997 and most of the kids were the same age - now many have grown older and moved on.  In the mean time we've had several houses built as well as bought and sold.

Our children are young adults and in college and I miss the 'the sounds of summer'.  Across the street from us are two boys who have a basketball hoop and they like to play until 10:00 and guess what?  My husband and I don't mind a bit.  We LOVE the sound of children playing and having fun.

We live in the country and I detest the sound of gun fire..rapid paced gun fire ...which is perfectly legal where we live.  I'll choose quads and basketball over that any day.

I'm with you. Our next door neighbors when we lived in Pittsburgh had a basketball hoop in the driveway and played all the time - it never bothered me. Kids laughing and playing are normal neighborhood noises, if you can't live with that you should consider buying a chunk of land and building somewhere in the country far from neighbors.

I'd put up a fence to keep the bow and arrow being shot into your yard.

I will NEVER understand how it is that some people just become butt-stupid the moment they procreate and think that neighbors and, for that matter, people in general, are just supposed to tolerate any little thing their precious offspring want to do... We all have to endure a certain amount of racket from whatever source unless we can afford that proverbial island, but past a point, really, it would be so nice if some people demonstrated better common sense, even if they have no reasonable sense of consideration for others.

Ugh, sounds like my former neighbors. They got a basketball hoop a few years ago, and all it did was bring trouble. The neighbor's kids never played with it, but every kid from the block and from Lord knows where did. It was terrible! The noise, swearing, and trouble was literally 24/7. Trash all over the place, broken bottles. The kids even took the liberty of tinkling in bottles and threw the bottles in the neighbors' yards. They were mostly teenagers playing and they felt they had run of the street. If cars wanted to pass, they (the drivers) got screamed at and balls thrown at them. The teens almost caused several accidents with cars swerving out of the way (I live on a cul de sac on the "curve of death" so let me tell you how often I had to pick up my mailbox and recycling bins). They would throw basketballs at people's houses and dent them. One time, a cyclist and her child had a basketball thrown at them because the teens thought it was funny. It was HORRIBLE for two years.

And people called the cops. The cops did nothing. The cops played with the kids or would say stuff like "they could be looting or causing trouble elsewhere." One time, the cops even brought the kids donuts and punch. The teens would swear and be generally obnoxious when the cops were around. They didn't care.

Then, the neighbors packed up and left and didn't take the basketball hoop! Then things got worse. The kids then broke into the house and garage and turned it into a crash pad. The cops still did nothing.

Finally, another neighbor had enough. In the middle of the night, he hitched the basketball hoop to his pickup and dragged it to the local dump. It even made the local newspaper because some of the kids and their parents (who didn't even LIVE in our neighborhood) said the hoop was taken down because the neighbors didn't want PoC in the neighborhood (there's 45 houses on the cul de sac and 19 of us are black or  Hispanic including myself), and that wasn't true. We were all sick of the noise and how the neighborhood was getting trashed. What my neighbor did was immature and I wouldn't recommend it, but enough was enough.

Wow, 45 houses on a cul de sac?   That's got to be a bit tight.

@KaliaMonet  Your neighbor did the right thing--it was an act of community service.

Strive for respect instead of attention. It lasts longer.

I moved to a 55-plus community mostly for the amenities.  A bonus is that no one has a basketball hoop on their property.

I would call call the police to inquire about that bow:/

The area of our campground where we are located is all senior citizens - but down off this mountaintop it is a more general campground with many families - kids - dogs etc. Anyway, we heard that some families had to be kicked out because the kids had those airsoft guns and were hiding in the trees and bushes and shooting people , campers , cars  with the pellets. They were caught by the campground  owner shooting at people in the pool. The owner said she would normally giving a warning first but this offense was too aggregious so they were told to leave immediately. I did not see anyones injuries from it but I heard they were painful - one man in the pool was hit on the side of his face and it was severely swollen and painful and another man was hit in the groin and had to be taken to the hospital because the pain and swelling were so severe. Some children were hit as well and were taken to the hospital out of an abundance of caution. They also left dings in camper and cars. I personally think those airsoft guns are  a very bad idea and would never allow a child to have one.

For anyone who doesn't know an airsoft gun is much like a BB gun except it shoots a plastic BB instead of a metal one. They are very popular now.

I feel you pain...honestly. I bought this house 23 years ago. Little did I know, my neighbor would open a day care center and use my other neighbor's yard as a playground. Right outside my kitchen window.

I also have people riding quads all hrs of the day and night, loud quads. I've had another neighbor boy shooting airsoft rifle out the top window at cars and animals. I kept finding these bright colors pellets in my yard and didn't know what they were.

People fighting constantly. People burning on non burn days. Going 60 on our 25 mph street.

It all depends on who you are around here. I would never buy in a neighborhood again.

I hear you, re: speeding up and down residential streets.  Even in front of elementary schools.  Drivers of all ages, too.  Not necessarily teens.  But, I must say that seniors around here seem to be more careful (more or less).

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).
