I was in debate in high school, so it depresses me that so often political discussions these days devolve almost immediately into arguing versus intelligently discussing some topic--presenting a sound thesis statement with appropriate facts to back it up and then having an interesting discussion based on those facts. Along the way in a good discussion, someone with another opinion can present a different thesis and back that one up with other facts. A good discussion focuses on the real facts and not on feelings. These days, in contrast, there seems to be a lot of anger and the citing of long-since-debunked "facts" as inaccurate "proof" of some immovable belief. This happens on all sides. Best to keep it off of QVC's site-- and avoid such arguments on other sites!
Here is the problem...a debate is not the same as a discussion.
A discussion is the exchange of ideas usually based upon a persons, background, faith, economic position, family dynamics etc. A discussion is often beneficial in understanding others positions on issues and perhaps finding common ground or compromises.
Then you have those who come in with "facts" to prove they are right and you are wrong. My "facts" are better than your "facts". It then degrades into the win at all costs mentality. Nothing is accomplished, no ones mind is changed and the mods have spent a lot of time deleting the whole thing.
Perhaps if there were more discussions rather than debates.......
I'd agree and to that end, debating, while it can, with long time experience, education, maturity and usually a controlled environment, teach critical thinking, it is often lost on the weakness of a debate where the outcome is only focused on winning or in the example of a forum, changing the mind of another. Which does not serve the "debater" well at all, and often fails to allow for the strength of a dialogue built on reason and logic.
Brava!

It has nothing to do with pretending! We post about "life" everyday here, I find it quite refreshing!
I totally agree, @JaneMarple. I spent a lot of time with politics in my real life and personal social media. I took Wednesday off work to go to my state capitol, talk to representatives, and register testimony on several bills in committee this week. I've got 6 other political events to go to this month. I've had weeks where I've been at the capitol 4 out of 7 days and one Saturday I was there for 17 hours straight.
It's nice to have one place where I can get away from that and focus on things like skincare, shoes, and whatever else without all that. No pretending here, just a deep appreciation for a break.

For many years, I worked in political offices -- both in the White House and on Capitol Hill. I have a love/hate relationship with all things political![]()
Having worked for many people who lived and breathed that world, it is hard to ever let go of being interested in what is happening.
I love hearing knowledgeable people discussing various subjects, but rarely, if ever offer my own views.
Poltical discussions, in public forums, often deteriorate to arguing or worse.

I can get my political fix elsewhere. I'm already actively involved and pay close attention to events.
I can totally see why they banned political discussions. I am surprised they still allow so much religious stuff and prosyletizing.

That is awesome! Lately, I am finding myself overwhelmed with politics in my personal life, so coming here to a politics-free zone has been kind of nice.

I want what I want because I want it, and I want it now - because I'm important and "they" better give me what I want or "they'll be sorry" all too often sums up the world today, whether it's on the internet, at school, in the bank or post office or the grocery store, or standing in line at a food truck - or in individual households. Mememe or temper tantrum.
Ehh...

@YorkieonmyPillow wrote:@QueenDanceALot I understand your post, but politics is the last thing I'd want to discuss at a pleasant dinner! Surely there are other, more uplifting things to talk about at a meal between friends. JMO..........
We used to have very interesting political discussions when we got together. They weren't arguments or full of rancor, they were just interesting exchanges of ideas.
I found those discussions to BE uplifting, as we respected one another's viewpoints. That was my point. They were adult conversations.

Of course it won't happen here, but those who don't want to engage in a poltical forum here wouldn't have to even see it, if there were a separate forum for it..
They could still "escape" the topic and be on this board, too.
