I balance my paper statement every month, but for some reason can't do it when trying on line. I don't know why I have trouble with doing that. Hopefully, my bank won't do that.

Me too @catter70

My bank charges a fee to mail statements also, and I refuse to pay it.

I get the statement online and print it....then balance the old fasion way!

I haven't "balanced" anything in decades.  Just eyeball the statement to make sure everything is OK and done!

@kaydee50

Me either. I do go online every day and using my checkbook I put a check mark next to everything that has posted.   To make sure there are no suspicious deductions.

@icezeus  - same here.  It's so easy just to look at what has cleared during the week instead of waiting for a paper statement and then attempting to "balance".

@San Antonio Gal

I am actually behind the curve that I still write my charges in a check book. My SIL and several of my friends actually use an excel spreadsheet.

Wanting a paper statement from the bank does not mean a person mails checks or doesn't monitor their accounts online. I pay all my bills online and visit my bank accounts online as well, but I still want a mailed bank statement.

@kaydee50

Because it is the original, not a copy, not an online rendering; both of which can be altered. There is hacking, power interruptions, corrupted systems, passwords not recognized. Considered the Q issues, not being able to sign in and odd error messages...

Your statements are safer being stored online @occasionalrain .   A paper statement can be stolen, lost in the mail, mailed to the wrong address, etc.  If it gets in the wrong hands, all your information is printed on the paper statement.

I pay nothing online and I get all my statements regarding my accounts in the mail.  None of the financial institutions charge a thing for the documents.   Since I was a jr. in high school when I opened my first checking and savings account I have loved writing the checks and getting the mail.  Still do.

@beckyb1012  I am guessing you are a boomer like I am?  I am 67 this week and also write checks for most bills when I can.  I think check writing will be gone when we Boomers die off.... it is what I grew up with....the youngsters today would never write a checkšŸ˜„

When we rented an apartment a few years ago and wrote a check for the security deposit, the agent was impressed!!  He said the young people do not know how to write out a check.  I'm sure now people can just transfer the money via their smartphones!!

@kaydee50

A check is pretty much self explanatory......SMH!

Another problem is some states no longer teach cursive.....And on some legal documents you are required to both sign in cursive and print your signature----I wonder what they do.  I just went to the doctor and had to sign such a form....

You just print it twice. Cursive is not required for a signature, it just has to be the unique way you sign your name. My son has bank accounts, has a state ID and a passport, and votes. He signs his name in printing.

I love my banking phone app. If I do get a check I just take a snapshot and deposit it. I have alerts set up and get balance info daily.

All banks are charging for mailing paper statements, they just don't state it by putting it into whatever fees they charge. It's all figured into everything.

@Trailrun23

I have 2 accounts at the same bank and I pay 0 fees for anything.

Not all banks have the same rules and different types of accounts have their stipulations.

@RespectLife, problem is I don't have a printer and wouldn't use one except for that. Guess I'll just wait and see what happens at my bank.

@catter70

I understand, many people don't have printers.  These days, it has turned into kinda a must!

I am lucky to print mine at work.

I have started wondering if the non check writing for them is due to only their thumbs working and not the other parts of their hand?

@beckyb1012

LOLOLOL!!  Too funny!

I am training my bosses daughter to eventually take over my job (although I am NOT retiring anytime soon in this recession!)

Anyways, she is about 22.

Doesn't know how to write a check, balance a check book OR use the keyboard properly.  Can barely work a calculator!

What the heck did they teach her in school????

Our company is old time, we handwrite checks, USE a check book etc.

Guess I have a lot to teach her!
