Doing  online  banking after moving to a community that have unlocked mailboxes on each road short distance from homes, but didn't like it.Think it is safer in today's world to go paperless ,I also do  auto pay which is a big relief in not having to remember when due.But I do check my bank accounts and credit cards regularly.

But just the other morning came in on one of the morning news show showing that the thieves do washing of the ink off  of checks and changing names,(unbelievable) report said you have to use pens with certain ink to be safe.

Re: Online Bank Statements

[ Edited ]

My two banks give us the choice of online or paper statements and they both charge a small fee for paper statements.  It has to be paper or electronic, not both. I took electronic but not because of the $3.00 (maybe $5.00) fee.  I did it for the security aspect.  I don't want my banking information on paper or going through the post office or sitting in my mailbox.  Not to long ago, a new mail carrier put someone else's mail in my mailbox and it was her bills and what looked like a bank statement.  Scary stuff!  My banks have apps. They both require passwords and one also requires a one time security code.  I still have paper because I can print them if I choose to or I can convert to a pdf and put them in a file on my computer.

I just manage everything online, no need for printed and mailed bank statements. I know exactly what's billed and what goes out and I can pull up the statement if I need to look at something. Bills paid online as well. I haven't have a printed bank statement in years and I love it !

I do not have automatic payment of anything. If there is a problem with a charge, getting it corrected after it's been paid can be a challenge. My printer needs replaced and since I seldom use it, buying another to save a bank money isn't something I care to do. Printer ink isn't cheap, and since I seldom use my printer, it's dries up and needs replaced. Then there is the issue of  a computer being corrupted and losing everything, being locked out. No matter if there is a good reason or not, I want my statements mailed and if the bank won't accommodate me without a fee, I will close my accounts and move my money to a bank that will. All that remains at the bank charging the fee is an IRA CD that I plan to roll over to Discover where I have several accounts and get free paper statements and postage paid envelopes included.

One of the banks I use notified me that they will now be charging a fee for mailed statements. I pay my bills on line but want my statements mailed to me. Because of this, I've begun moving my money from that bank and will be closing my accounts. Banking is competitive. I regularly receive offers from various banks wanting my business. The latest was $300 to open a checking account. Nickel and dime fees charged to a current customer is an added incentive to relocate their checking account to the bank offering them $300.

@occasionalrain  I bank with BOA. They started charging $5 for mailed statements a few years ago....I decided to just do everything online so I did not have to pay...

I just transfer the BOA visa bill money from my BOA checking account. No check mailed and no postage either. I pay many bills by check, a few I pay on auto pay on a credit card....I am from the old school....slowly going towards not writing checks, but it is hard to change.

@SeaMaiden    I also bank with BOA.  The only checks I've written in the past year were to my hair stylist who is independent has no credit card affiliation.  I manage to pay every bill by auto pay or by bill pay online.  I've done this since 1995 with never a mishap and can only imagine how much I've saved in postage and stress.  I don't even think about sitting down to pay bill as I used to do; it's done automatically.  What freedom!

I wish you luck finding a bank that no longer charges for a paper statement.

I pay nothing online and I get all my statements regarding my accounts in the mail.  None of the financial institutions charge a thing for the documents.   Since I was a jr. in high school when I opened my first checking and savings account I have loved writing the checks and getting the mail.  Still do.

I already have one, Discover. They don't charge for money transfers either. I also have a credit card with the bank I'm leaving and I won't be using their credit card in future either. I have accounts in two other banks and several other credit cards. I don't need their bank and, it seems, they don't value me so we're breaking up.

Not trying to tell you what to do. However, I encourage you to look at alternatives. You are leaving yourself wide open for identity theft.

With that said, my aunt ignores me when I share this same advice. She still likes to write checks, and she pays for her paper statements. She refuses to do online bill payments or banking.

I have already had that happen.  My boss and I both had our social security numbers stolen and had to go through the whole police report ect....  Thank goodness my nephew is our banker and Brian got wind of the problem they day they started taking money out of his ONLINE account and the total was well over $100,000.00 that was stolen.

We never knew how someone got our socials but it did happen.
