Only an affluent elitist would condone the behavior since the store is "insured." How obtuse and dense can one be. The mindset is unfathomable to me. In a recent attack store security were bear-sprayed by the thieves. If caught, they will face heightened charges due to the weaponry.
I have seen reports of employees being terminated, simply because they called 911 during one of these reprehensible heists.
Fortunately, New York State is working on a bill making it illegal for an employer to fire retail workers for that reason.

@JoyFilled Warrior Thank you so very much for your thoughtful post and encouraging words . I will do my level best if I get this career to protect others and myself. I love my parents and sisters so very much and I want to be around for them- they love me so much too. I love to cook and bake desserts for my family and I want to stay safe on this job so that I can continue to do that. I want to stay safe so that I can find a husband in the next few years- I'm 34 and I'd make a wonderful wife. I also want to stay safe so that I can pursue my art career on the side- I went to art high school and art college and I have a few inventions I'd like to patent that I prototyped/designed and I'd like to self-publish a children's book that I'm illustrating/painting so that my little niece can read it. Lots of big and little dreams that I'm trying to do for myself and thank you very much for your support

How about a fee to come into the store, then get it back when they purchase something or leave? would not have this,if they had boards like the guy had at Seven Eleven, and beat the tar out of robber. everyone on the article loved it, so America is sick of these people.

Probably the masked pandemic, along with changes, hopefully temporary ones, in what one might loosely call 'mentality', together with legitimate fear and other concerns, appear to have led to a reluctance to addresss shoplifters, both among law enforcement and retail management. I was pleased to learn that one local store here has had enough, having suffered routine losses as theives blatantly walked out of the store with merchandise, and with the assitance of law enforcement set up a series of successful stings.

@SportyShorty07 - Wishing you the best of luck with your upcoming tests/exams.
I have a brother who was a policeman and, looking at the things happening today, I often ask "Who would want someone they loved to be a police officer?"
But we need people like you, so I commend you on your choice of career. Stay safe!

I was watching the news about this latest smash and grab. And all I could think of was when DH and I were in Italy.
Wanted to go into a bank to change some currency and, at first, couldn't figure out how on earth to get in! Then we realized - you have to step one at a time through the first door. It then closes behind you and you have to wait for the second door to open.
Same thing on exiting! Hear of many bank robberies in Italy? Maybe we'll have to introduce some kind of similar system in stores in big cities, since that's were these types of crimes seem to be most common.
Try to rob the place and you're automatically locked in between the two doors. Bulletproof glass, I'm sure.

@Venezia Thank you very much for your kind words and thank you to your brother for bravely serving as a Police Officer. My city is understaffed with over 500 officers short to meet the staffing needs of the city's police department and multiple recruiters are reaching out to me to take this role- I was scared at first to choose this career, but I feel the need to give it my best shot. There's a year trial after passing the academy when I can fully evaluate if this is the right job/fit for me and I'm going to go into this with an open heart and mind and I'll be very conscious of my limits and if I can handle this or not. I'll do my best
