Anonymous threats are not so anonymous online | Minneapolis Criminal Defense Attorney Blog

"People sometimes overestimate their anonymity when it comes to online activity. When people harass a person on social networking sites, download illegal material or instigate online scams they may not realize that all of these leave a trail. Minnesota state and federal law enforcement have entire agencies devoted to investigating Internet crimes. Police can track these people down and all of a sudden, a person who thought his or her actions were anonymous is charged with committing a cyber crime.

A recent online phenomenon has been keeping law enforcement very busy these days. The behavior is referred to as "trolling" and consists of a person posting provocative comments on a site, hoping to drum up extreme reactions from other people." (more at link)
