I am not eloquent enough to be a blogger anywhere on the Internet, so I opted to come to this forum this morning to post this simple but sincere message:

Today is Memorial Day, not Veterans’ Day. We have a separate day to thank the survivors of war. Today we honor those who made the supreme sacrifice.

To those of you who have lost loved ones across history and the world in military actions, I extend a heartfelt gratitude. I have never had to watch a loved one leave for parts unknown and to pray that they would return to me, whole and well. That kind of pain and worry is unimaginable to me, yet very real for so many of you.

To those whose loved ones did not return, we have the biggest debt. Please know that, as we grill our hamburgers and hot dogs, we take time this day to reflect on the sacrifice your family has made for this nation. If it were not for you and your loved ones, none of us would have the liberties we are able to take for granted today. Thank you and may God bless you.

Strive for respect instead of attention. It lasts longer.
