I feel he fabricated most if not all his story. He flew back to NJ, had a hearing and was not court martial-ed but instead given a desk job, and every member of his unit was killed within a month? No way.

I too think he was trying to embellish his service. Perhaps trying to justifies why he had a desk job during a war that took so much from so many. If his story is true? Then my first opinion is that he is a coward, and has offered all of these explanations to first dates and others as a way to assuage his guilt. For that reason, I hope it's the former and he's an embellisher.

Lots of strange things happened during that evil war.

One of my cousins was killed in combat. Very shortly after that his brother was drafted. The family protested as he was the only remaining son. Apparently, if that was the case the remaining son was not supposed to be sent to combat. Nevertheless his orders were to go to Viet Nam. My uncle moved the family to Canada where they stayed until amnesty was finally granted.

Even my Archie Bunker ,WW2 vet of a father agreed with what they did.

Who knows. Maybe there is some sort of truth in this story.

I feel....like it's a fabricated story.

That thought crossed my mind immediately, as well. If true, I'm not sure how I feel, as my family has sent men off to war since the American Revolution, and I know that freedom is not free. That being said, I have a son, and don't want him to die in war. It's very hard to know he may have got away with something that really holds no honor, but if he were my father/husband/son, I'd be glad he was alive. Very conflicted with this scenario.

My best friend of my youth died in Vietnam in 1969. He died heroicially and there is a square in our home town, where his house was, now named after him. I bring flowers to the memorial when I go to Washington. I wish he had taken a plane home and been punished any way other than dying at age 19. He was a draftee.

Sounds like one of those urban legend stories.

Maybe he was granted the status of conscientious objector at the hearing. He wouldn't be required to participate in battle if so. I thought that had to be addressed at the time they were drafted, though. I can't really remember much about it right now. Just a thought.

You have to file for it, undoubtedly before you get to a base before jump off.

Well at least I didn't point out to you that you seem to have limited reading comprehension. But since you called me rude, I WILL be rude.

Hardly, if you are reading this thread......I'm not the only one that has questions. Hope that settles it.
