I still sometimes begin a sentence with 'Gee'.
I don't know what that word means, though.

My grandparents...and my dad referred to underwear as Skivvies. I said it once to my grandkids and they thought it was so funny...Now they always refer to their underwear as skivvies when they get dressed. 😄

@San Antonio Gal I think of the old Brady Bunch episode where Peter is impersonating Bogart when I hear "swell". "We're having pork chops and apple sauce. Isn't that swell?"

WOW. Great topic @mormel20 ! ![]()
Cupboard vs (whatever it's replacement, cant think of it now.) Shelf doesnt have doors, Cupboard does.
I use/used many of these former words mentioned above. This is an education!
In fact, some of these posts above have introduced me to alternative words that I never even thought to use alternatively, so I'm appreciate you're offering the "hip" new alternative words! heh
Sometimes I use either words mentioned, cause they might have a different definition/meaning to me, such as Cellar vs Basement.
Or difference in settee, vs sofa, vs couch, vs loveseat all defined something different to me.
Or gripe vs cold, or sniffles. Gripe included vomiting. (I had that frequently as a kid).
My Grandparents called it "Ice Box," but I was raised on "Fridge."
I wonder, Could these have to do with locale one grew up in, or words picked up from elders, regardless, &/or our current age, for instance.
I'm born & bred Yankee, displaced now & I've learned A LOT of new "Southern" Words, customs such as:
"Bless your heart," - I *sure do welcome* using it now!! There's no Yankee equivalent. If I understand, it sounds nice but, yet used as snide. ![]()
I have to be careful of some new words I use, because I may use them inappropriately or misconstrue their meaning. So I try to Google/Urban Dictionary unfamiliar words first.
GREAT enlightening TOPIC. Thanks!

the bathroom was called " The Toilet "
my gramma would say " I gotta go to the toilet "
or "go put this in the toilet " meaning the room.
