Odd Comment From Marie Osmond

I watched Marie Osmond tonight on the Nutrisystem show with Rick. I'm a fan of Marie's, just curious about her comment.

She made an odd comment about her son's career of helping people get into assisted living or rehab facilities from hospital care.

She said, "He doesn't like hospitals and what goes on in them. He is making sure people get the best care." She made the comment to tell the audience how he told her that he's so glad she's now healthy and how it will help her later in life to avoid the situations he sees on his job.

All that is great.

The odd part was how she talked negatively about hospitals. I totally agree with her, as I worked at one for 20 years. But, I thought her Children's Miracle Network organization gives money to children's hospitals all over the U.S. She probably said it as it relates to the elderly and their care, but she probably didn't realize what she was saying.

I have nothing against her comment... I think her son is right. When it comes to elderly patients, hospitals don't know how to treat or take care of those in need.

I disagree with your blanket statement that hospitals don't know how to treat or care for those in need. Obviously that isn't true or those going in wouldn't be coming out at all.

Childrens' Hospitals are run on different principles. Care delivered in any of this nation's hospitals devoted to the care of our children surpasses adult care in every parameter beginning with financial terms. The best will never turn away a child in need regardless of the parents' insurance coverage or available income. No expense is spared in delivering state of the art Pediatric Medicine to our young ones. As a rule, medical personnel in these hospitals know the meaning of vocation. In my experience ,the same cannot be said of any of the hospitals serving adults, predominately or exclusively.

Marie has demonstrated her genuine concern for children in a way few can boast of. If she has less than glowing terms for adult or elderly care I'm sure she has her reasons. She is blessed to have a caring, concerned, involved son.

Why does her perfectly understandable personal opinion make her the subject of public criticism?

Her opinon should will be misconstrued for blanket generalizations not based on factual data. Unfortunately, that is what will happen when people can't think for themselves.

Hospitals have a hard time meeting the social and emotional needs of the elderly. Often there is no spouse who can act as an advocate. The hospital I go to has set up a separate unit for the elderly who have general medical issues so the elderly don't get lost in the shuffle.

Hospitals aren't supposed to meet the social and emotional needs of the elderly. Hospitals should be doing their best to prevent hospital infections. Elderly men and women are often immuno compromised and this should be their priority.

When there are no family members to act as advocates for care, this responsibility can be passed on to social workers staffed at hospitals ~ provided informed consent is given.

Other centers and caregiving arrangements for elederly are available, however many are unattainable due to limited income. Assisted Living, Housing for the Elderly that have programs such as NORC's in place so that the elderly age in their community.

I think the OP took the words spoken to mean something else.

I've had recent experience with a late relative and the hospitals gave the care that was needed. I must say many of the younger patients were people who didn't care for their health or welfare in the first place and there were many of them there. Obese, drug users, accident victims due to doing stupid things, etc. The staff was constantly overwhelmed. More 'care' might be given if people weren't so irresponsible with their health and with their lives.

This was my experience in the ER last month....drug addicts looking for a fix claiming 'pain'.....our nurse told us how common it is today...

@CoG- maybe because people can't distinguish opinion from fact. There are many excellent hospitals in this Country and one just saved my husband's life. All hospitals are not equal and opinions are just that, non fact based.
