In my experience, sitting on a front porch is pretty common. Sitting on the threshold with the door open is not.

In my pantry with my cupcakes...

Not elderly, I'd guess in her 50s.

None of her family members sit on the threshold. They bring a chair out and sit under a nearby tree. I've seen her on a chair under the tree on occasion but the threshold seems her preference. The chair may be to allow others to enter and leave the house.

I agree with this. I love friendly neighbors but leaving the door open would not be an option for me. The thought of a bug or a lizard crawling in just sends me into a panic.

I think the lady must like to watch the world go by but doesn't have the energy to take her chair out to the tree. Or maybe she's shy and thinks sitting under the tree might invite people to come close and talk and she doesn't want that.

I completely agree with your thinking.

Many people have commented so I believe you may have some idea what might be going on with the neighbor sitting on her doorstep.

However, acting on any of the suggestions to reach out to this neighbor would not be anything I would do for the reasons you mention.

Maybe she has trouble walking. Maybe she can't climb the stairs. Maybe she sits in the doorway because she is listening to the tv inside the house.

Maybe she's autistic, agoraphobic, schizophrenic or has some other type of illness.

I don't think it's odd. I think it's what is comfortable for that particular person.

I was wondering the same thing. Is she sitting on the floor on the inside of the doorway with her legs sticking outside the door? I can't quite picture this scenario. Sounds very uncomfortable to me.

If others are living there also, I doubt that she would be that lonely.
