If they are blocking the threshold then they have no screen door?  Seems odd.

Growing up in my parents' house we lived on our front porch.  It was so comfy - glider, swing, comfy chairs, blinds, flowers, etc.  We even slept out there when it was too unbearably hot in our bedrooms.

Now I have a beautiful deck that I never sit out on.  Same with my covered patio.   We used them when my hubby was alive.  I'd rather stay inside in AC comfort.

In our previous home we had a screened in porch - that I loved.

Just to clarify, there is no stoop, no steps, no porch. The door opens directly onto the sidewalk. All that's there is the frame of the door. The door has to be open to sit there. It would not be a comfortable seat.

I know nothing about this person and don't wish to encourage a friendship with someone who may be a gossip, a borrower, constantly in need of a favor, a ride... Once begun ending it may lead to more unpleasantness.

Asking someone why they're doing something implies disapproval, is rude, and none of my business.

I asked here out of curiosity thinking it may be common somewhere in the world.

You may have just wanted to know if done in other areas, but your question sure brought up some fun and interesting answers!

Just want to tell another-

When we would go to the boardwalk, my sister and I would always walk the whole place, do some of the games, buy something, eat pizza,  and I asked my father and (one of) my stepmothers what they were gonna do as they went for the nearest bench to sit on. My father said they liked to people watch!

I thought, how boring when they could do all these wonderful things .

Now I understand-people watching is an art and I always do it too though sometimes I feel like Gladys Kravitz lol! For those of you too young she was the neighbor on Bewitched who was always watching everyone, but that's not people watching, that's spying and gossiping. People watching is just a nice relaxing connecting to our fellow humans. It's comforting to see other people about.

Porch sittin'!  My family would do it most pretty nights after supper!  We would sit on the front porch, read, watch people drive by, wave at ones we knew, and enjoy life. 

Not so much for chatting as relaxing and contemplating life.  After I got married I had to point out to my husband that we were "porch sittin'" not discussing things!    He learned quick!  

At our last house here, with a great porch, we would often sit out with a big pitcher of tea and glasses and neighbors would stop by, get a glass and sit a spell!!!

Well, porch sitting is normal but the neighbor isn’t “porch sitting” just sitting on the door frame at sidewalk level. I find that odd.

yeah, now that I can picture that it does sound kind of odd or strange. It must be uncomfortable and yes, the bugs!

Agree with others, this is old fashioned behavior.  I could never leave my door open no matter where I lived.........bugs and mice.  Yuck.
