It's not a habit with which I'm familiar, but then I don't get out much anymore. TBH, being the nut I am, the part that freaks me out is having a door wide open so that flies get in the house.
I cannot handle having ONE fly in my house so I wouldn't do it. ![]()

Saw a lot of this when we were kids. Old people. I remember the woman looking very stern and the man smiling at us. Always the same, just different people. I really wondered about them. I think it mostly went out when air conditioning came in. We have a screened in porch and I love it more than air conditioning, which I can take or leave it. I LOVE my screened in porch and so glad we spent the money. We don't people watch. We only have trees which I love, too, lol. But when I see old people doing it today a wave of nostalgia comes over me. That was then and this is now. They're still doing it.

I'm not interested in the woman, I just wanted to know if it's common where others live.
There have been questions so I'll answer those.
She is not elderly, can walk well.
Family members bring chairs out from inside of the house to sit upon.
She doesn't sit in the house with her legs sticking out.
She sits on the bottom edge of the door opening, her feet are on the sidewalk in front of the door, her knees are up like a squat.

That visual is even stranger than I had originally thought. I hope she's ok.

Other than her choice of seating there is nothing strange about her, she seems perfectly normal in every other way.

Wow, there must not be much room between her front door and the sidewalk, if she's sitting in the doorway with her feet on the sidewalk.
Very odd.

Maybe she's just perfectly comfortable sitting on the floor and in this case she keeps her butt off where it might be dirtier while enjoying people watching and fresh air. Mabye she has a mat right inside the door that makes it more comfortable.

Or maybe she just thought, 'Hmm, I think I'll sit here on the threshold of my doorway for a while, & make all the neighbors wonder why.'

At the opening of Call The Midwife there's a small child squating. Her knees are wide apart. Imagine that's my neighbor's position, but my neighbor's butt is resting on the edge of the threshold, her feet in front of her on the sidewalk that's directly in front of the door. Obviously, her knees are in enviable condition since she has no problem getting up and down.

Her behavior does seem kind of strange to me but I guess it's not strange to her.
Funny, as I was reading the responses here I noticed a few folks used the term, stoop. My parents used to call our front steps a stoop. I haven't heard that term in many years but it made me think of my mom and dad. 😊❤️❤️
I wonder if stoop is used more for those who live or grew up in the city? My parents grew up in Brooklyn, NY. Just wondering...
