October 1 Is An Integration Landmark in History

On October 1, 1962, escorted by U.S. Marshalls, James Meredith integrated the University of Mississippi.  He was a nine year veteran of the U.S. Air Force and must have had nerves of steel.  Amid much protest and turmoil, he became the first African American student at that university.

He is a fascinating individual.  He graduated, later survived a shooting during a march, became a lawyer, and ran for office as a Republican congressman.

I love the way history reveals to us previously obscure people, who because of an inner grit and a "something extra", are able to help influence the course of human events.

Can't post a link for fear of inappropriate sidebars, but Mr. Meredith's accomplishments are to be found all over the Internet.

Statue erected 2002 on 40th anniversay of his admission.  I like the way it is facing the building as though he is walking up to his first day.

He was also shot, as you mentioned, trying to do a solo march during the Civil Rights era.

Thanks for posting, @Oznell
