• Nearly 20,000 blood stem cell transplants are performed each year in the U.S. alone

• There are three types of transplant:
• <ul> <li>Autologous transplants, that use marrow or stem cells from the patient instead of a donor
• Syngeneic transplants, that use marrow or stem cells from an identical twin
• Allogeneic transplants, that use cells from a related or unrelated donor

• More than twice as many autologous transplants are performed each year than syngeneic and allogeneic transplants combined

• Over 100 diseases can be treated with a blood stem cell transplant including leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, MDS, sickle cell disease, certain anemias, inherited blood or immune system disorders and some autoimmune diseases, to name just a few.

• Transplant patients can be as young as a new-born and as old as mid-70s

• Although bone marrow and stem cells from adults are most often used for transplant, cells collected from the discarded placenta and umbilical cord of a newborn baby can be successfully transplanted into patients as well.

scottie: Thank you for the link. This has been brought up recently in his treatment plan so we are hopeful. They were addressing using skin cells? I'm not sure if the marrow was brought up but I'll pass the info along.

Thanks Marp. I wonder what his disorder is? It sounds like it might be Aplastic Anemia.

Also, I don't know if this is still the case, but people of African American descent and Asians have a hard time getting matches also.
