the two jewelers here are independent and only service the watches they sell and only change the batteries for those watches

The one I use is an independent and small store also. One time I had to run into a small jewelry store while traveling out of state after my watch had stopped. No problem, they changed the battery in less that 5 minutes. It is unfortunate that your two stores are so uncooperative, almost all the stores around us will do it and advertise watch batteries.
