You are correct that the only realistic answer is to stop the disease at its source.

Sushismom, I've just been thinking about this and when I hear people talk about blocking flights, it amazes me because it seems like they haven't thought it through and what that means. In my own way, I do what I can do...I donate to npos on the ground, and I'm emailing representatives and urging more help for West Africa.

I think for many of us we know we need the facts but we have been in situations where we were told things about viruses and even the common cold that later proved to be untrue. So what happens? We loose confidence in these people and don't really know what to believe. I can't tell you how many doctors and nurses have told me......you aren't contagious after 1 day on antibiotics, you aren't contagious after 7 days and that is debatable, you can only get it from the air you breath, you get it from touching body fluids ( aren't wet sneezes body fluids and the air you breath{#emotions_dlg.confused1}) and on and on and on it goes. This medicine is what you need for this.....and you come to find out little research had been done and 10 yrs. later and people are dying from it. Sadly and even more to the point, I think the main problem over all of this is we have lost faith in our government and leaders to do the right thing by us and for us. This started a long time ago in this country and just keeps getting worse. We have lost faith that they will do the right thing....even given the facts. I don't think you can blame people for not trusting what they hear or read. That is why I said in another post...that until they get the facts from someone they trust (and it is up to them to do that for their own peace of mind) lecturing and trying to get the facts across will be to no avail. You can't try to convince another person's mind...they have to do that for themselves facts or no facts. You will wear yourself to a frazzle trying. Let's just call it human nature . We all have it!!

just popping in to say what a good post. We think alike it seems. Having been in the medical field since 1983, I have found that what they said one year, 5 or 10 years later they retract. Whether it is the safety of a drug that was later pulled (think Vioxx and diabetes drugs) or a type of treatment, it is always changing and reacting.

You are right about human nature but let me just add nature itself to that fact. We cannot control anything in nature. The environment changes, the atmosphere changes, the viruses and bacteria change and all the way up and down the food chain.

Predicting the future is not an exact science and while we want solutions to be fast and furious to ease our fears, it just doesn't happen that way. As soon as an answer is discovered, a new problem comes up. I don't spend a lot of time worrying about the future because I only have control as to what I do in my own life and the choices I make.

Thanks for acknowledging my post. I agree with everything you said. I think you said it much better than I ever could and with fewer words! I wish I had you and others here ability to say what I want without rambling but that doesn't seem to be one of my talents!

Yes, we're often told one thing and then, with more research, told another. But sometimes all it takes is to stop and think about it. As I've mentioned several times, if Ebola was as easily spread as a cold a much higher percentage of the population would be infected. As it stands now, in every recorded Ebola outbreak less than 1% of the population came down with it. Less than 1% and in countries with a much more primitive healthcare system than we have here in the U.S.

On Meet the Press this morning, Chuck Todd said they're going to concentrate screening efforts here in the US at the 5 major airports who get 70% of international travelers.
