Re: Newborn Mix Up ~ Couple Suing

Unfortunately the hospital will probably just settle this for a large sum of money.  I am sure she knows that.

Colostrum: Your Baby's First Meal

Colostrum provides all the nutrients and fluid that your newborn needs in the early days, as well as many substances to protect your baby against infections. Its color and thickness are due to the fact that it is higher in these protective factors. (Compared with more mature human milk, colostrum is also higher in protein, slightly lower in sugar, and significantly lower in fat.)

While your breasts will not feel full the day that you give birth, you already have enough colostrum to nourish your baby. Your body will produce colostrum for several days after delivery until your milk increases in amount and becomes more creamy or white in color—a time that mothers frequently refer to as the milk “coming in.”

You get sent home with the wrong infant it's a true calamity. You get 20 minutes nursing a baby that isn't yours, it's a reversible error. One baby fed at the breast, one baby fed formula, two moms and two newborns safe and sound. Worth a lawsuit? Preposterous.

Re: Newborn Mix Up ~ Couple Suing

@itiswhatitis  A three hour c-section? She must be referring to the time they started prepping her to the time she was out of recovery. I have coached many moms/friends.family members going through c-section..have never heard of one lasting 3 hours.

I  skimmed the article, is she serious? The best she will do is settle out of court...like another person said..the mom suing in her own words was on some heavy medications...doesn't say if this was the case for the other mom..in which case the wrong person is suing. Will those heavy duty meds impact the other baby? Good grief, give me a break.

@Mrsq2022

I see your point. I wouldn't have wanted my babies to have breastfed from another mother. There may be another lawsuit.....Not saying I would have sued, but I would be worried that the mom could have some disease or something. Gosh.

Re: Newborn Mix Up ~ Couple Suing

After my first c-section while in the hospital, I too was given the wrong child.  My husband was wth me.. I remember looking at the baby and say " this is not my baby"

The  nurse handed me a bottle with the baby and the baby was hungry and crying, so I fed it.  In about 15-20 minutes, the nurse came running back in with my baby and made the exchange.  I would never have breast fed someone else's baby.

This was 38 years ago and was no big deal.  I imagine it happens fairly often.

My roommates' baby was circumcised in error by a doctor she didn't know.  It's a good thing she wanted her baby circumcized or it could have been a big problem, I remember the doctor coming in to tell her, he said there would be no charge and they laughed about it.

Don't get me wrong, it's actually an awful mistake.

But the mother is going after money for all the wrong reasons.

She's going after because she can.  It's out in the media now because she put it out there.  I guess she's hoping it'll up the ante.

So much for 'it takes a village' approach.

Now that, I'd have freaking sued them for every single penny I could have gotten. No way they are genitally mutilating my baby and I would joke about it. Heck no. They would have seen the full wrath I'm capable of.
