Re: New furniture - how to prevent cat from scratching

I just replaced my furniture 1-2 years ago. The cat had scratched the other set up badly. Wasn't really interested in spending so much for a replacement set, only to have him do the same thing again. I think I may have started a thread here asking for suggestions just like you have here. Here are the things that worked for me....(1) got scratching surfaces. I got him a pole type thing, and something for the floor. He loves both. (2) got sticky paws, sold at the pet store. It's clear double sided tape. I think there may be some sort of scent on it that cats don't like, but I don't smell anything. I put this tape on all sides and edges of the new furniture. Worked like a charm, he stayed away from it. Actually, just took the tape off a few months ago from one last chair, but he started scratching it. So luckily I still had more tape, and put tape back on sides and edges. He has stopped scratching again. Good luck to you.

Thanks! I'll have to look for the at sticky paws.

Since he already uses the scratching posts a lot I need to try something else as well.

Re: New furniture - how to prevent cat from scratching

I traditionally would have given the above answers. However, four years ago I adopted a cat who has all kinds of scratching areas and insists on clawing leather, microfiber, and anything else. He chews off the soft claws, digs right through the sticky tape and even scratches my tables. I keep his claws trimmed, have all kinds of toys for him, and on and on. He even seems to enjoy being squirted with water. I do not believe in declawing, so I think my kitty has won the battle and the war.

The best thing I ever did was purchase a cat tree. I have never have had my kitties scratch my furniture once having the tree.

Re: New furniture - how to prevent cat from scratching

Just this Tuesday I bought Feliway spray at the vets. I have only used Tuesday, Wednesday, and today on the corners of the sofa the cat scratched and he has not touched it once since Tuesday. I paid $35 at the vet, it may be cheaper elsewhere, nonetheless, if it continues to work I will consider it money well spent.

Interesting, I will have to check that out. Thanks!

It is the behavior control spray, I am so impressed with it that I am considering the diffuser to aid with peace between kitties.

tape ugly but does the job

there is 2 sided tape in the pet section for this, but I used clear packing tape too

This is what new use on new furniture and rugs. After a while, we can remove it and the cats no longer seem interested. HTH
