Re: New dog owner--need advice

The quality of the food will effect the volume of each "potty" not necessarily the frequency. As others have stated , look for a 5 star brand. While I am house breaking him I would be less concerned about the frequency just be happy he is going outside. Highly recommend using a crate also train him as if he was a puppy.

Congrats with your new pet, enjoy every moment

Re: New dog owner--need advice

I, too, have always heard that better quality, more nutrient-rich, food will create less waste.

We use Wellness dry dog food. It is a bit spendy at PetSmart (around $60, plus tax, for a 30# bag), but I've been getting mind on AD now from Amazon and paying almost $20 less per month. That's a big difference!

Obviously, for a small dog like yours (ours is a 90# plus Golden Retriever) you don't need to buy as much so it will cost considerably less for any good quality food.

Oh, BTW, he goes twice a day (once either before or after breakfast and once around dinner time). As an adult dog, I think that's probably pretty normal.

If you are new to dogs and haven't already done so, do a search on Ebay for DOGS FOR DUMMIES .... you can get it with free shipping for about 4 bucks ......

CATS FOR DUMMIES is very good, too. {#emotions_dlg.thumbup1}

You may have also considered this but if not, you need to buy a good enzyme based cleaner for any accidents she has and I would also recommend a black light. A dog' s sense of smell is very superior to ours and unless you totally eliminate the smell, it will be a signal to her to go there again. The black light is not very expensive and will reveal any accidents not visible to the naked eye. Good Luck and Congratulations!

Thank you, NeNe1010. I would never have thought of a black light.

Your are welcome! Also, the most important thing is patience, lol. Every time I was ready to throw up my hands & thought they would never get it, they finally would.

I'm not sure what you mean by them going 3-4 times a day? That's not a lot.
