New Washer and Dryer Suggestions

Hello, I' ve got to purchase a new washer and dryer. My gentle wash is gone on my 17 year old Whirlpool. I would like a top load model with a gentle cycle that doesn't cost a fortune. I usually buy my appliances at Lowes... Do any of you have any suggestions or recommendations as far as a good brand? What about the high efficiency models? How are they different (other than having to use a different type of detergent)?
