Re: New Procedures for Car Insurance?

@drizzellla - What an ordeal and yes, I would be changing insurance asap.

When we picked up our new car, we contacted our ins agent with the info right from the dealer. We gave the name/make/vin number etc. She then faxed over our temporary insurance card until the new one came in. Same policy, new info that was it.

We did have the title from our trade in and they did a search to see if it was involved in any accidents - which it wasn't.

For us, it was easy peasy.

This whole thing was made more complicated than it should have been.

My car insurance went up $408.....no changes, no tickets, no violations.

According to my agent...All insurance  carriers are cracking down, re-evaluating everying and raising prices etc.

She has seen up to $900 more for NO reasons whatsoever.

All of a sudden, after 6 years, they want to do another home inspection.

I'm w/ an Independent agency that has access to other carriers.

We are shopping around.

Just an update....after checking 25 new companies..the best they could find was $80 MORE !!

SMH

She said many companies now are refusing to insure in NYS.

So the $400 increase I must eat.

The only change I am considering is upping my house deductible from $1000 to $2500.  That will save me $150 per year.

Changing my auto deductibles will only save a lousy $79.

SMH again.  A lot of good it does to have a perfect record AND never have made a claim in our lives!!!

Re: New Procedures for Car Insurance?

@RespectLife I agree, it really stinks.  They use to reward you by not having claims, tickets etc.  I have a friend who works for a big insurance company and they are losing money with all of these hurricanes, fires & tornadoes.  Someone has to pay for it and it is us.  They are also cutting jobs and out sourcing the adjuster jobs.  At least before the adjuster worked for the company and tried to get reasonable quotes and not get gauged by the body shops.  Now it is a free for all out there.

@drizzellla  are you still with that Agent or have you switched? Hope everything worked out for your son.

My husband is shopping right now. The agent has never gotten back to us. She insisted that we pay 6 months premium on the new car - no problem. BUT we had paid 6 months premiums on "my old car" insurance. There were still 4 premium months that were for future months. So my husband feels we are due a refund or credit for the 4 months.

THEN the agent sent a 6 month bill for my old car. My son automatically paid the bill. He didn't want any trouble. BUT there should have been 4 months credit on my old car insurance bill. And since the insurance is still in my name, I don't know how she could have billed "my old car" for 6 months when the insurance was already paid up through October.

The relationship is beyond repair.

Unless this is some weird state issue I'd be reporting this agent to the insurance board or whoever in your state. You insurance should just transfer to your new car with adjustments added for cost. No new 6 month thing should apply as long as the current policy is active. Did you guys pay HER for this or did it go to the insurance company?

I'd call your current insurance directly, tell them to take your son's car off the policy and that's it. He can call or go online and have insurance most likely byu the end of the day. This is all pretty simple  now. The can't force you to keep insurance on a car you don't even own anymore.

Of course the confusion might be because your son took the car and YOU called to have things transferred to your son. She might have thought you wanted to pay for the insurance and that's why it didn't transfer to your new car. You can't just tell your agent to transfer something to your son. He has to ask for it and it would be a new policy. If this insurance is still in your name tell your son to get it done today. This could be done in an hour.

@drizzellla   You have insurance on a car that isn't even yours.  If the car was in an accident I doubt they would even pay out - you don't even own the car.  Tell them to take the car off of your policy - you sold it.

@SamBrown  and that does not really make sense. Sometimes it takes about 2-3 weeks to get the new title but as long as you have a bill of sale, there should not be a problem. Suppose she had sold it on Marketplace or something like that, would the Agent have done the same thing?

if @drizzellla  had know that this could have happened she would not have told them the name of the person she sold it to.

And it's been a while since this happened so the title should have been delivered. @drizzellla  only found out when she got the bill for the insurance for both cars.

@croemer

Oh no, that is not what I am saying at all.

What I said was that my agent stated that some carriers no longer want to do business in NYS.  Some out there are staying regional to particular areas only, and some find the laws and regulations of NY so excessive, they won't bother.

There are still plenty of carriers available....but none had a better price than my current.
