New Kitty Owner Needs Help

Someday I may be laughing about this!! I have only had my first kitty for 2 years. She has kinda long fir and has always used the litter box and been very clean. Well today she was using the litter box and then walked away with a chunk of poop on her butt. I thought I could quickly remove it with a paper towel but thats not what happened. There was a blood bath and now my hands are all scratched up and my carpet has little poopy smears on it. Kitty (Simba) won the battle and now she is sitting there giving me a dirty look while I am waiting for the bleeding to stop. Any suggestions?
