I like a top sheet and I have never heard of this "trend" However, it is much easier to wash a sheet repeatedly than a blanket or comforter, and sheets are easier to replace than the others as well. The top sheet is what touches my skin and therfore I wash it more. Frequent washing of anything wears it out quicker. That being said, to each their own as I like to say.

I'm early 60's and never use a top sheet, haven't in several years. Don't find them necessary.

I don't get it - so what do they use instead, just their duvet to cover with? 🤔

Always interesting to read people's comments on such controversial issues.
I've always used a top sheet, blanket, and a bedspread growing up and as an adult. I like the top sheet tucked in at the bottom so it stays in place around my feet. Always washed sheets weekly.
I started washing sheets, blankets, and bedspreads more often when we got a dog who likes to sleep with us. I still have night sweats from menopause so I'm laundering sheets and pjs frequently.
Doesn't bother me what others do, but I do get a bit creeped out thinking about hotel bedding sometimes.

@Krimpette wrote:I posted earlier about being in favor of using a top sheet. I'm surprised at how many are adverse to it because of getting tangled up in it. My top sheets are always tucked in between the mattress and the box spring, with "quasi-hospital corners". Even though I often turn from side to side during the night, it doesn't seem to be enough for me to get tangled in my top sheet.
for me, that is even worse than having a "loose" top sheet. i feel so constricted and confined! #notatucker

@Interesting. I don't feel confined or restricted at all. I sleep alone in a queen-size bed, so I have plenty of room.

I use only the flat queen size sheet on my queen size bed.
I'm single.
I fold it the long way so it serves as a top and bottom sheet.
I sleep in one position all night. I have a queen bed the right side never gets use.
So instead of washing pounds and pounds of material (top, bottom queen sheets) is just have to wash the queen flat sheet and the pillowcases for the two pillows I use.
No more dealing with the fitted sheet and all that bedding to move to make the bed.
One more thing. When I had my hip replaced two years ago, the surgeon said to make sure to change the sheets twice a week....he said they are a haven for bacteria and not to let the healing wound come in contact with the sheets if possible til it was completely healed over.
He asks his patients specifically how often they change their bedding. He said it's amazing the number of people who go WEEKS or more without washing the sheets.
YUCK....under ANY circumstances.
You DO sweat and lose skin cells all the time...including during sleep. And if you're married...well...you know.

@stevieb wrote:After many years of religiously making the bed with all of what were considered the 'appropriate' layers, I have to admit that I now often skip the top sheet too. I enjoy a fresh bed but absolutely hate changing out bedding. I have enough quilts, comforters and so on that I don't feel compelled to always use (and launder) a top sheet.
Bottom sheet would need laundried more so than a top sheet. Freshly washed sheets are one of joys in life.

@Krimpette wrote:I always use a top sheet. I'd rather launder the top sheet than a blanket or quilt that has been directly on my skin. Plus, I like to sleep cool and my sheets give me that feeling.
EXACTLY!

in college, i never used a top sheet.
once i was married, i used a top sheet, mainly because it just made my bed look more complete. lol
divorced and still use a top sheet. i get hot and sweaty pretty easily, especially during the summer. i do like to be covered, so a top sheet accomplishes that. they HAVE to be microfiber.
all bed linens get washed in HOT water using the SANITIZE feature on my washing machine.
i also do NOT tuck my top sheet in between the mattress and boxspring. i absolutely HATE that!
my kids are twentysomethings and one doesnt and never used a top sheet, the others do use top sheets.
@sunshine45 Now see, this is a prime example about how it's all about choices and personal comfort. I cannot stand microfiber sheets. To me, they're never crisp or cool compared to percale. I had two sets and donated both of them.
Agree. Couldn't return the microfiber sheets fast enough. So hot!
