Same calls I was receiving last week.

Yes, this is a scam but actually YOU clicked on a link that you probably thought was the correct web address and it was not.  These companies (scammers) actually put extra dot and dashes, maybe an extra letter by which if you are in a hurry, click on it and all of a sudden your computer tells you that you need to call this number because someone is taking your bank accounts and credit card numbers.

Now, you think you can just wait and it will go away, it doesn't, it's actually buried in your comIputer.  This needs to be removed by somebody that knows what they are doing or professionally.

It has happened twice to me and no one's fault but my own and had to contact Dell, buy an extended warranty for it to go away.  I was trying to watch what they were doing but this is embedded in your computer and needs to be removed.   Just shutting it off, waiting and turning it back on later does not solve the issue.   Hope that helps.

@shaggygirl You should have told them to come on over & arrest you. LOL!!! Do you think they would have hung up?

On a similar note, l encountered a scam on my iPad. I thought iPads are immune from malware and ransomware, but l was mistaken.

l used to unsubscribe from most junk emails, thinking they would stop. Well, some did, but the smutty ones never did. When unsubscribing from one that l thought would actually work, my iPad screen locked, and l couldn't get it to unlock. It asked me to call some phone number to fix it, so l knew it was a scam. I called Apple Support to report it, and a very knowledgeable techie guided me through a number of steps to unlock my screen.

He told me-- and this is the moral of the story-- to NEVER unsubscribe from any junk emails, and don't even open them. Just press "delete all." I'm getting more junk now than ever before, and 99% are smut, but l don't give it a second thought any more.

Part way through the call I started yelling "bull*** bull****" but then realized it was a robocall. I was sorely tempted to dial the number and yell that over and over when a real live person answered......but then I thought better of it. A few days ago a call came for one of my kids who hasn't lived here in over 25 years, something about their social security number compromised and blah blah blah. It's never ending what these scammers come up with.

Well, it happened to me again today.  Same thing as yesterday.  So at least I knew right away what to do.

All that makes me want to have the olden days to come back.

I grew up in post WW2 Germany on a small farm in a small village.  Even if someone had money, you couldn't buy anything because there was nothing to be bought.    My first writing implements were goose quills.  There was ink in the house, so when going to school, we wrote with those quills.   No high tech gizmos.    Now I have to fight these charlatans with my wit and that isn't as sharp as it used to be.

I read all the posts on this thread and I am so sorry some of you or family members fell victims to these unscrupulous people.

Has anybody gotten calls that say they are from 'SSI' (assumably Social Security), and have your area code and prefix?

I've gotten a few of these lately.  I don't answer such calls, of course, but it's odd that they would have SSI in the name field and I know that the local SSI office is not out here in the west part of town so they wouldn't have this prefix.  I imagine this prefix might be obsolete anyway.

I imagine it's just another one of these scam things going around.  But one odd thing is that I notice the same phone number each time.

Yesterday was a busy day - I received around 8 scam phone calls. I always tell them where to go and they hang up!!!!
