@songbird wrote:Everyone seems to a walk around without masks. But it's required to wear in every public building, every store, etc. So most people (including me) put on a mask before you step in to a store. I always keep away from other people in the street. And follow the strips on the floor of whatever store you are in. The masks are uncomfortable to me. I might be allergic to them. My make up runs under them. And my eyes weep. It's so bad, I sometimes run outside somewhere not near people and pull of the mask and just breath....
There is very easy and logical solution to this, @songbird

The only certainty is that there's major debate over the efficacy of wearing masks, so Gavin Newsom's assertion that mask-wearing is crucial, and that he's following the science is nothing but hooey.
Guess that's why hooey Doctor's wear masks in surgery. Dentists and their staff all of the time while with patients long before this virus because that was always the science. All Doctor office's always had masks available with a sign up if you came to the office ill put on a mask. Don't know what classes you had in high school or college that you miss this basic premise.

@hopi, the only "major debate" about masks was early on. TPTB didn't want the public to buy masks out of concern that the health workers' supply would be affected. And also, yes, layman's cloth coverings are not as effective.
But subsequent credible studies prove that cloth coverings do cut down on transmisson.
I have no clue as to why there is so much resistence to such a basically harmless practice for 99 percent of us. Even in states that don't require it, I bet their health officials wish that they were.

There was always credible evidence that wearing a mask is helpful. That's why half the world routinely wear them. Not just N95s, surgical masks.
There were even studies that wearing cloth masks are helpful.
Why was there such resistance? Hidebound maybe.
Our thought leaders started out saying, With the mask I protect you, you protect me. We can all see the results of that. A lot of stupid anger.
Now they are saying 'it minimizes the risk' which is a much more socially decent thing to say.
Just as an aside, I've read some pre-pandemic first hand accounts of exchange students from places like Japan. They felt the sniffles coming on, so they put on a mask. They thought their fellow students would appreciate their thoughtfulness. Big mistake. People thought they had the bubonic plague.
I think maybe people are afraid there will be social pressure to wear a mask every time they get a cold, and that's why they object to wearing a mask now.

@stuyvesant, I don't think that this is one of the reasons. I've yet to hear anyone even intimate such a fear. I hear that it's uncomfortable and/or that it violates our freedom. And it has become a political statement. Regardless of the reason, it very likely will undermine our progress.

@suzyQ3 I've heard those arguments about paying taxes and everything you can think of.
What I find interesting reading these boards, is the reason I can't wear them for medical reasons. Fewer people are saying that now.
I read horrible stories about people trying to find an empty aisle in the store to lift the mask for a few moments, but people are wearing them however hard it is.
And it seems to be based on what the people around you are doing.

Was just gonna say the same thing. Picked up something at Walmart yesterday and was behind this guy and a friend who, while walking up to the door was reminded of necessity of mask and he said he couldn't wear one (asthma) and once thru the door the two of them were laughing and he began his "nobody can tell me what I have to do" mantra.

It's that way here too but I think ppl are getting virus fatigue bc no one is challenging anyone going into the grocery store without one anymore.

Here in CA, cases and hospitalizations are on the rise. Governor Newsom may shut us down again. We were supposed to visit my FIL today on the patio of his nursing home for the first time in 3 months, wearing masks and staying 6 feet apart. The facility called this morning to tell us that they had received new restrictions from the state health department.

@Financialgrl - In my neck of the woods, everyone may be getting "virus fatigue", EXCEPT THE VIRUS.
As a country, we've allowed and encouraged ourselves to become so "I'm so much more important than you are" that science and common sense have been forced into a back seat.
And if you are hopping on the "....but a month ago the scientist(s) said ("..............") and then they changed their minds and said ("............") so I'll just do as I please" TRAIN, PLEASE DON'T BREATHE if you feel you have to do that in public, OR come here and make the decisions for my fragile, still infected Loved One.
