@OfCourse, glad my post was helpful. There had been talk of instituting net neutrality rules for years but never went very far because providers were living up to their voluntary commitments.
Then, a few years ago, net neutrality rules took on an urgency because several of the big names were essentially floating trial balloons about introducing what I've seen referred to as levels of access analogous to cable and satellite's tiers of service.

The change sounds just awful
While everyone was focused on the circus, the end of net neutrality was slipped through.
@tansyIt wasn't "slipped through." You just weren't paying attention. The head of the FCC was all over the place talking about it before it was repealed.
It was only in effect since February 2105...less than three years...and the internet was fine before that. Then it sounds like there were some "the sky may fall" fears which brought us net neutrality and there are "THE SKY IS FALLING!!!" fears now that it has been repealed.
The internet is a great thing. But it isn't a right.

@OfCourse wrote:Thanks, @Noel7. I have been trying to understand this issue since it was instituted a few years ago (2013?). One would think that these news writers could come up with something that people could understand in all this time, but NO! Maybe they don't understand it either.
Maybe they don't want us to understand.

That could be it. Maybe they don't want us to understand it. Maybe it's not the terrible thing some have made it out to be, and if it's explained properly people will understand and say, "Is that all? Well, nevermind then."

But it should be EQUAL. You and I sould get the same speed as a humongous corporation. Remember throttling? The carriers were slowing down the little people (you and me) in times of heavy traffic. During net neutrality, they were not allowed to throttle. Yes, it is No longer in effect since the repeal, but we have not yet begun to see the effects. I think I heard that Congress can pass laws to help out. Everyone should get equal service.

@HippiifiedShould people who pay for dial up or for a lower speed get the same speed as those who pay more for DSL?

Of course not. That is a different service. But if you have broadband, you should get the same speed as anyone with broadband.

This will be held up in the courts for a while so nothing thankfully has changed yet.

If you want to know why Chairman Ajid Pai chose to bring this up for a vote the information is easly found at the FCC website. He has anwered many questions to members of the congress.

It's no big deal. The market will keep things in check just as it did before NN.
There are different levels of broadband, like it's always been. Faster speed costs more money.
The only thing hard to understand was all the fussing about it. People can't find the big bad thing because it doesn't exist. All hype.
